    Where's the Rain?

This was taken last week just north of Abilene, TX. It reminded me of John Steinbeck's word images of Oklahoma in the 1930. I call it Where's the Rain?

    Taken with a Sigma 17-50 mm f/2,8 @ 17mm, f/8 1/125 sec with a polarizer.

Nice photo, my wife (a realtor!) suggests "Fixer-Upper" as the title. She has a bit of a one track mind and no conception of art ....

    Hey All,

    Nice image!

It reminds me of this one by my favorite photographer of all time - Dorothea Lange.

I grew up hearing stories about the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression and Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath is my all-time favorite book. When I see abandoned buildings like this I always wonder what the story behind them is.

My heroes have always been cowboys and they all carried guns-
and they all rode horses-that is all but one.

His ranch was called the "Flying Crown" and "Sky King" was his name. -Jim Dilly-

Yes, I agree. When we first moved to Lafayette, where we live, in the mid 1980s, it was a time of economic depression. The oilfield had collapsed two years before and Lafayette an oil and gas town sufferer greatly.

We would take our kids on bike rides around the neighborhood. There was a house that was one day was obviously abandoned by the owners during the night. There were children's toys, lawn furniture, and other items left behind. One of the children called it the "Sad House." That name stuck until someone else a year later moved into the house.

When I see abandoned homes like this one, I often think of our sad house and the family that lived in the home. What stories these buildings could tell.

I find myself taking a lot of picture of abandoned or run down builds, Something draws me to them?

While we are not that dry in the Danville, VA area, we are said to be above one of the vent pipes from Hell. Rain can show up anywhere in a 10-mile vicinity, but as soon as it hits the vent pipe, it dries up! We do suffer high humidity in the Summer, especially in the morning. Afternoons are better, regardless of heat, if the winds pick up and dries that dreaded humidity below the 50% level. Lo, beware the setting sun though, the humidity increases real quick.

Anyhow, in Danville, this is what is constituted as rain.
