    Apollosmith's SW Pacific Adventure

I'm under way in the P-38J "Marge". What a pretty bird. I've missed flying the P-38 a lot in the last couple RTWs. This will give me a lot of seat time in Dave's great creation!

First flight was from AGGN to AGGM. A short flight with no navaids. And I about got lost. Not a good sign of what's to come.

    Leg #2: AGGM - AYBK

A few more obvious landmarks this time and an NDB. Absolutely clear skies too. I could get used to this.

Getting the hang of this. I miss the dive flaps on my P-38M, but this -J is nice. I modified the original panel a bit to put the ADF in the main panel, a slightly more usable HSI, and a timer. And I took out the GPS altogether. Good stuff!

Smooth sailing. I hate to leave under such good circumstances, but need to sleep.

Realized I wasn't posting the required take-off/landing posts. I thought these were only if you didn't have Duenna. Anyway, I'll do so now. I assume the Duenna time, not the forum time is what's used anyway, right?

Departing on Leg #5 - AYKV - CPG

UPDATE: For the first time in this adventure, I can see nothing but blue sky and blue ocean. Nothing else in sight, but the moon... not even a cloud. I just lost my outbound NDB signal and won't have any more navaids the rest of the way. I'm sure this is just a small portion of the exhilaration and fear that those actual pilots felt.

Down at CPG to complete Leg #5.

I had a nice line-up for landing, until I realized it was a road and the runway was on a small hill to my left. Was able to get her down though.

    Departing on Leg #8 - AYGR-AYGN.

Update: I forgot to refuel, forgot to change the time to day, and now I just overran the WEP about 1/2 way there. There was a small grass strip I could land at, but I'm going to forge on... slowly... and hope that there's enough daylight and fuel to get me there. Interestingly, I'm flying over Goodenough Bay. Yes, I hope it is! I knew I had that checklist here for a reason!

Down at AYGN to complete leg #8. Lost a bit of time on the flight, but it was a beautiful approach with the sun setting. Half way there!

Landed at AYNZ to complete Leg #10.

A very fun flight. The navaids weren't right along my flight path, so there were a lot of angle and distance calculations. I even used the runway angles of a few airports I flew over to determine how close I was to my flight line.
