Thread: Freeware Grumman Duck

    Alrighty, I'm COMPLETELY CONFUSED here. After scanning through the threads concerning this add-on, I have no idea of it's actual status. Is it legit freeware or not? Based on what I've seen, there doesn't seem to be ANY ACTUAL proof that it's a rip-off of the Icarus model, yet there still seems to be some controversy. If it's legit, maybe Icarus needs to give it a rest and let it ride. If not, it needs to be put to rest.
    Cheers,

    As far as SOH is concerned, after an in depth investigation involving highly critical comparisons between the Icarus Gold Ducks and SWingman's Ducks, there is no piracy involved here. The SWingman Ducks are so completely different in so many ways that for them to be based on an illegal rip of the Icarus Gold Ducks is out of the question. Icarus Gold was asked to assist in our investigation and refused. They were asked to submit proof of their allegations and they refused. When continually pressed to provide even one shred of solid evidence, Icarus Gold left SOH without ever providing one tangible bit of evidence to support their claim that SWingman's Ducks were based on illegal use of Icarus Gold source codes.

    The SOH staff, which is comprised of a number of former and current developers, modifiers, tweakers, repainters...basically we know what we are talking about, looked at all the evidence we had before us and we agreed that the SWingman Ducks are fully legit freeware developments that are not based on ripped source code from the Icarus Gold FSX payware Ducks.

    The controversy that continues is not on SOH, as this matter has been fully investigated, fully resolved as far as this site is concerned. Mayhaps other sites are carrying on with this controversy, but that is their business.

    If there were any doubt in the minds of the SOH staff about the legitimacy of the SWingman Ducks, the threads concerning it would still be locked and no uploads in relation to the package would be permitted. SOH does not, will not, allow pirated material to be hosted, talked about, or shared via this site and it's functions (meaning PMs, threads, posts and upload library).

    The staff of SOH did not handle this matter lightly. There was a lot of activity down in the bowels of this site..the dark smelly places where we staffers hide from the light of day and eat bugs and such.....over Icarus's accusation of piracy and over the legitimacy of SWingman's freeware package. We wanted to make sure that we gave full support to which ever developer was in the right. As it turned out, we believed that SWingman'd freeware package were right and we thus opened these threads back up and have made way for uploads related to this package to be made. We are hoping to get a response from SWingman granting up permission to upload his package to our library...and we will gladly host it knowing that it is a legitimate, freely developed package that the sim community will enjoy for years to come.

    The UV maps are texture maps with all the paint and insignia and marking removed basically....a set of sheets that show painters exactly how the various parts of a sim aircraft are arranged on the texture sheets. Using these, painters are better able to find those small parts of the plane and are better able to line up panel lines, insignia and such. What the UV Maps show are outlines of the various parts of the plane that are found on each texture sheet.

    For FSX-users, who are either using the flight dynamics by OBIO, or some other flight dynamics type other than the FSX flight dynamics contained with the original download, be sure to replace the contact points section with the following that is contained within the original FSX flight dynamics that came with the aircraft, in order to correct the stance of the aircraft when in the water, if it it happens to be off for you, as in RobH's first screenshot:

    [contact_points]
    //0 Class
    //1 Longitudinal Position (feet)
    //2 Lateral Position (feet)
    //3 Vertical Position (feet)
    //4 Impact Damage Threshold (Feet Per Minute)
    //5 Brake Map (0=None, 1=Left, 2=Right)
    //6 Wheel Radius (feet)
    //7 Steer Angle (degrees)
    //8 Static Compression (feet) (0 if rigid)
    //9 Max/Static Compression Ratio
    //10 Damping Ratio / Water Rudder Effectiveness (0=Undamped, 1=Critically Damped) / 1.0 = normal

    It's the same for both the J2F-4 and J2F-6 variants, and you should then get something like this, and no 'hops' either...

    Well, I've got OBIO's revised engine texture and sound set as well as some textures for FSX I found over at Flightsim.com. Now I just need an aircraft to use them with. From the screen shots it looks like there is more than one version included in the package (two different engine cowl shapes) but I'd like to verify that for myself.

    I've also seen mention of some cfg tweaks by OBIO but I haven't been able to find them to download. Any hlp in that regard would be appreciated.

    Bottom line though is that I need an airplane. I've got a fever and the only cure is some duck. I also hope that SWingman hasn't been scared away by this whole rediculous event.

    As a moderator, i cant say anything more. Needless to say furious is an understatement.. But at least we are moving in the right direction to help restore this wonderful little aircraft to its rightful place..

    Reason: CORRECTED DOWNLOAD PROCEDURE

    FYI: The download link still works directly out of the Google cache of that web page.

    CAVEAT: I believe Google may stop caching downloads linked from the top level of cached web pages after several days or possibly weeks, so download it ASAP...while you still can ! :iidea:

    Update on the FSX flight dynamics tweaks for this bird. All gauges are working, take offs are great, landings are great, flying is great, handling is great. The one thing I have not been able to figure out is how to get this bird to stop on the water. I was able to get it down to 10KIAS but the tweak I did to get it to that prevented the plane from getting over 48KIAS on take off runs. Anyone have any ideas?

    Oh..and fuel consumption and range are off....but from what I understand getting those two things dialed in give even the FDE Wizards gray hairs.

    Thanks GaryGB for explaining how to download this file, it worked like a charm.

    Thanks Moderators and Admins for your investigations, opening this topic again and clarifying the situation, very appreciated.

    Thanks SWingman for this beautifull model, I can't wait to test it tonight after work !

    And big thanks to all the guys here who keep posting corrections to improve this model.

    Just had to say that.

    GaryGB, sorry, but I'm getting nowhere with your method of getting this model. I just come back to the 'file removed' page.

    Hopefully the file will be restored as a normal download.

    No joy with either Firefox or IE.

    All I am able to get is 'file removed'..........looks like for now this plane is only available for a select few.

    Hello again:

    Using FireFox 3.6.16 in Windows XP Pro (without the "Windows Firewall" running), when I click on the "Download" link at the far right end of the bottom line of links below the original JFJ2F Duck package blurb in my Step 3.) as I described above:

    http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforum...l=1#post572778

    ...I am prompted to allow access permission in my '3rd party' software firewall.

    FYI: I allowed this in my software firewall ! :iidea:

    My Local Port: 2412
    AVSIMRUS "re-written" Download web page IP: 93.158.1134.190
    Domain: mc.yandex.ru

    NOTE: The above works in FireFox regardless of whether I check or un-check "Block Pop-up Windows" via:

    FireFox Menu > Tools > Options > 'Content' Tab > "Block Pop-up Windows"

    Perhaps one's browser version responds differently to Windows "Internet Options" set via:

    Control Panel > Internet Options > 'Security' Tab > 'Custom Level' Button > "Security Settings"

    FYI: If I use Internet Explorer 6.x I also do NOT get the web page re-written with a 'green box' and "HTTP (EU)" link and the original JFJ2F Duck package blurb as above; instead, all I get is:

    "File was removed or inaccessible"

    Hope this additional info might possibly help others to access the download ! :mixedsmi:

    PS: Our posts crossed on the server while I was composing this; many thanks to kilo delta for your clarification here:
