    Anti-alias and filtering in FSX

For some time now I have chosen anisotropic filtering and just clicked on the anti-aliasing button in FSX. However, with my new card (NVidia GTX570) I have been looking at setting this using the NVidia control panel. As a start I set the anti-aliasing to 4 times. Check King Soopers Ad and Piggly Wiggly Ad.I can't say that I saw any real difference in FSX but probably lost a frame (ie the FR dropped by one).

Out of interest, what do you guys do with filtering and anti-aliasing to get the best visuals?

    Cheers

    Paul

The use of nVidia Inspector is the ticket, as nHanser will no longer work with the newer drivers.

    From NickN: http://www.simforums.com/forums/nhan...opic36586.html

    Much easier too.

i get much better performance by letting the card manage anti-alias than by letting FSX manage it.

    Thanks Scott

That's nice and up to date, as I am using the 266.58 driver.

Thanks also for the other replies :salute:

Maybe with newer drivers, but the newer ones have too many problems,I use older ones that Nhancer still work with.It depends on what drivers you use.

I went ahead and downloaded Inspector today. I have spent the last few hours playing with it. Here are my initial thoughts for the benefit of anyone who reads this post and hasn't used NVidia Inspector before -

The threads mentioned above are very useful and tell you where to get Inspector and also how to use it.

Read the guidance note carefully! Its very easy to miss something.

Inspector seems a nice little programme.

Using inspector its very easy to try out a variety of AA and filtering settings in FSX

I found that the highest suggested settings reduced my frame rate and caused stuttering (perhaps not too suprising as many seem to have overclocked processors - which I dont have).

However, after trying out a few lower settings, I find that - in terms of FR and stutters (gone now) I am back where I was when just using the FSX in game settings. But, graphics have improved. Most noticably tree shimmers are much reduced.

So overall, well worth trying out, IMHO. As with everything in life, you have to pay for it. But if you accept the trade offs, then this is a simple way to find AA and filtering settings that best suit you and your pc.

I usually pass on new GPU drivers because they are a pain to reset for each of my flight sim apps...

that said - this latest driver went on right over the top of my existing old driver - using the GUI selection to 'repair' / 'update' the old driver vs the 'clean install' option

the reason I took that risk is that I figured I would have to do a clean install anyway so why not try the shortcut - and It Worked - so that hassle was saved.

then I tried the nvidia inspector v1.92 - now - if you have tried that app and you are getting a runtime error : ie 'cant find the correct runtime file for this app' error....you have a corrupt file

I tried the first few times to get it to run and no soap - this was late last night....
today I deleted that first download and went to a different site - got a new file and It Works
In fact - I am seeing a real improvement over my last drivers wrt steadiness - less fluctuation in FPS and much less "water snapping" ...thats what I call it when the water appears to reset or 'snap' its textures from some kind of render lag. It would happen every few minutes before the new driver - now I've yet to see it.

I really feel this topic needs to go in the Tweaks area so I (members) can find it later. Otherwise it's going to get buried. I know I'll be asking the same question Paul has eventually!

Its always difficult with new drivers. I stayed with the NVidia 197.45 drivers for a long time on my 'old' pc. These drivers were very stable and work well with FSX. For the new pc, I decided to go with the latest drivers - 266.58 - as I figured that they would be better for my card GTX570 which is a pretty new release. The drivers seem very stable and work well. Generally people have found an increase in FR with them when using 4xx and 5xx series cards. One or two people have remarked that they have seen a small increase in shimmering with them. The only downside that I have found so far is with OrbX scenery - in external view - when flying fast over a runway and looking down. Then you can see a shimmering effect - just on the runway. OrbX are aware of this issue -

This issue is not visible in any other views. So, when flying from the VC, they are fine.

As far as inspector is concerned, the latest version is 1.94 available here -

I am impressed with it as I mentioned earlier. It gives a good range of options for AA and filtering.

    Cheers

Interestingly, in the short term at least - its getting a lot more visibility here. I think that many people come to this sub-forum whereas only a few visit the 'other' sub-forums regularly.

You're right..lol. I figured it would get misinterpreted. Understandable. I didn't mean like, NOW!
....Meant as a suggestion for reference. We will no longer see it when the subject fades to the next page. This question always comes up and is good for anyone who wishes to OC...
