    CFS1 Memorial

    Hello to all!

Death is a subject that CFS1 simmers, like most others, are confronted to almost every game. We simply "re spawn" and go for another round.

But real death, as far as I know, does not work that way. Eventually, we will all have to face it personally but, in the meantime, it will come to us by "proxy". I was myself left to cope with the grief of loosing two "virtual buddies" recently at Joint-Ops. We now only have memories of them but, as long as those memories survive, a bit of their presence will be felt by the whole CFS1 community.

This is why I "committed" a Virtual Memorial Monument. It is an apparently very simple virtual object but its centerpiece, a rotating terrestrial globe, is the most complicated piece of work that I ever created. It is meant to represent the worldwide community of CFS1; Designers, Fliers, Contributors of all sorts to the game shall have a place on that Memorial... once dead of course!

    Four plates on the small obelisk supporting the globe bare these words;

    ENGLISH-
"The world will never forget them, for they will fly forever in our minds and in our hearts"

German version is from Wolfgang Grünewald, a well-known scenery designer, and Spanish translation from AAC_Baseketboll, an AAC member and an accomplished bomber-flyer. I wish to publicly thank them both for their contributions.

    SOH has granted me the permission to make this thread a "sticky" so that you can post your suggestions here for;

    - NEW NAMES -

If you know of someone deceased that should be remembered on this Monument, leave a post here with, preferably, his virtual "handle" (real names only when the deceased was publicly known this way), his real name (when known), his birth and death's years and a few lines to describe his contribution to the CFS1 community. ONLY people associated to CFS1 will be considered. They could have been flying mates in your squad or on the "Zone", addons designers, CFS1 WEB sites founders or contributors to CFS1 community.

    Let me use the two first inscriptions on this monument as examples;

Krazy Kat, (Pete Schick), 1936 - 2006, long-time Joint-Ops and OB virtual flyer. Well loved by his family and his peers. Retired military, he brought to the game he so feverishly liked his sense of organization and his sense of humor.
Pine, (Chris Cromie), 1958 - 2007, co-founder of Joint-Ops and OB Distinguished Order, he was an accomplished virtual flyer, bomber specialist, and a first grade teacher renowned for his calm voice and his proverbial patience with a long list of students at JO.

    - NEW PLACES -

The Memorial was integrated to AAC_Ripe and a BGL "stand-alone" near SWNBFTF (Silver Wing Navigators Bomber\Fighter Training Facility) memorial will be uploaded to "scenery Add-ons" section. But it can be added to any other places in CFS1 world. Simply give me the coordinates

    (example: AAC_Ripe Monument is at N50°51.23' E0°9.66')
and a copy of the scenery you would like it to be integrated in. I reserved the right to decline demands.

New Monuments will come in scenery folders with MEMORIALXX names and two sub-folders (scenery and texture) and can be installed like any other "normal" scenery or, if you want, the Monument could be "integrated" to your scenery folder. I will give preference to squad bases.

    - NEW LANGUAGES -

I have already put plates in English, French, German and Spanish but I realize that you may have other language in mind. Feel free to communicate with me through PM or e-mail and I will try to satisfy your needs.

I make here the solemn promise that I will take care of this Memorial Monument for as long as I physically can in the hope that younger CFS1 members will replace me and add, when time comes, my own name to it.

    Regards,

    Hubbabubba

As the AAC motto states "United" in fun.

I guess you could say this was in the paint booth for a while.

Hubba: That spinning globe was the first thing that really caught my eye.

~S~ what a nice gesture Hubbabubba.
Over the years we have had news within cfs of players who have passed away .
I will never for get those of who I have played with ,in a game or talked with about cfs.
I do not really know them but. I feel I know them very well, when we talk and pass the time within cfs I am saddened by the news that they have left us .
As you know every player is an individual .and my thoughts will always be with them.
    Nice gesture sir.~S~

    greetings All,
I think that this is an important subject and don't want to see Hubbabubba's work get lost in the shuffle.
With that in mind, I have made this thread a Sticky.

    gwar,

I would need a bit more information.

Look at the section "- NEW NAMES -".

If they passed-away in 2008 - which I will presumed to be the case - I would appreciate at least their year of birth. If anyone knows them more intimately, a short eulogy in the style above would be apreciated.

I tried a short "member search" but was unable to locate any DOS_GHOST. As for grandguy, he would have been born in 1925.

Also remember that this memorial is for people related to CFS1 in some way. If they were not, at least, flying the game, it would be for CFS2-3 and M$FS scenery-makers to create a monument for them.

    Thank you for your comprehension.

Nothing to be sorry for, gwar!

The Memorial being installed in CFS1 scenery, I don't know how it would react in more "advanced" Flight Sim. But if developers are interested, my API macro for that construction is available upon request.

You request had me reading grandguy posts, and I came to realized that he was a fellow Canadian who was in the "real deal" during WWII. My sincere condolences to his family and friends, and my eternal thanks for his contribution to World freedom.

He would certainly have earned his plate on a CFS3 Memorial.

I would like to submit a name for the memorial; Dancer_213, Dave Dancer, 1945-2009. A good friend with a ready wit that always flew honourably and fair, the virtual skies will be a bit emptier with his absence. Many great games between the 213th and the 453rd back when the CFS1 zone was jumping. Others may remember him or the 213th Hornets from the zone.

His name will be added to next release. I know it is not much for those who miss him, but has long as he his remembered, part of him will stay with us all.

213th and I appreciate it hubba, but I got his last name wrong, didn't strike me ti I was reading this...it is Greenwood, why I typed in Dancer I can only think is because that is what I called him all the time. But, not Dave Dancer, But Dave (Dancer) Greenwood. Sorry...

No problem. The chisel has not yet started carving the marble.

When people were known by a "handle", this is the name that will be on the monument in preference to "real" name. This is a "virtual" monument after all!

I will be releasing updated textures for the monument within the next week, so it is your last chance to submit names until, at least, next spring.

I was to release these textures mid-summer but the death of my own father between Christmas and New Year's Eve has stopped me cold for a while. Sorry for the delay...

    a member of the FS2004 community, Pointy31, aka Mike Mire, passed away recently;
    http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforum...ad.php?t=25328
granted, I never saw him in CFS,
but from what I have read,
he was a great guy and a positive influence in the Flight Sim Community.

    Sorry smilo

Some FS2004 scenery-maker could, and should, create something for the game's afficionadores.

    Memorial update

Update for the memorial was uploaded a few minutes ago and should be available soon.

I just realized that "memorial01.zip" has disappeared and that the download link is broken. I have fortunately a copy of it so, if the administrators want to, I can re-upload or send it by email.

Tell me here or by email or personal message what you would prefer.

    Great idea...

Just make sure that the translations are done by people who are really native speakers and know grammar...
I taught ESL for the Army all over Europe after I retired... and although a Medical Dept. officer... I had
NATIVE ratings for Spanish and Italian, as well as PROFESSIONAL for French and Portuguese..
Regulations provide that Professional rated translations MUST be revised by NATIVE speakers...
To make a story short... the FOR in "for they will not be forgotten" is spot on for French... (because
precisely is what it meant in the English original)... (intransitive verb forms)
In Spanish, however, para ellos means FOR THEM... not BECAUSE THEY WILL NOT ETC.
English is a usage based language... few grammatical expressed rules.. and prepositions totally change
the meaning of verbs... shut-UP and pipe-DOWN mean exactly the same... non-native speakers have
difficulty mastering this... go-ON and go-in... two completely different meanings....

Being native, of course, does not confer infallibility... we got plenty re-blooded Americans who DO NOT
obviously master such subtleties... but it reasonably (provided they are knowledgeable) wards off such errors...
In this day of "automatic" digital translations you see all kinds of problems... just try to interpret some
of the Chinese, Japanese or Korean instructions translated into English on some equipment and products...lol...

    NOTWITHSTANDING... a fantastic idea!!!

Does this mean that a transfusion is required to become an American?

    Thanks gaucho

French is my native language and I speak and write it way better than the average francophone, IMHO...
As for English, I'm pretty fluent in it but, just to be on the safe side, I have English-speaking friends proof-read important documents. The memorial was such a case.
As for German and Spanish, I had to rely on third-parties.
I do use Google translate on occasion, but in this case, I relied entirely on good friends. It was their native language but, as for their mastery of their own grammar...

If you have a better translation to offer, do so, I don't mind. Whenever a new update is made, I would make the correction.
