    NAF El Centro version 2

Well I am almost done with my major construction project here. I had built NAF El Centro last year wit hthe help of Jim D and John Sinstrom. This year I was lucky enough to get out to Cali to meet up with guys from our flight sim group and we headed on out to El Centro to take in the Blue's first show of 2010. After pulling up to the gate I felt like I been here over 100 times in real life but it has only been in the sim world. I took notice of all the new buildings in and around El Centro.

I had to rebuild the whole base from scratch again to line up with the photo real scenery I am using. I noticed in and around El Centro there were a lot of farms. So they should be in the sim. I have it to where they wont be a FPS hit on a basic system. Seeing I have a basic PC I'm building it to where I can fly around with comfort but at the same time if I want I can crank up the scenery complexity to very dense t get the full effect. The new items we made that are in the scenery:

    1- Air show speakers
    2- Air show fencing
3- Porta-Potty, hey you gotta hit the head if your there for a show right???
    4- Chalet tents
    5- Hangars
    6- Main gate
7- Photo real scenery for area around base.

    Things to be added soon:
1- Air park just inside, pass the main entrance we will have 4 planes retired and on sticks.
2- Maybe AI traffic for free flight
    3- Completed air show scenery
4- Complete El Centro area photo real scenery (Trouble shooting as for some reason the surrounding area is flashes and vanishes when your within 2 miles of the sqaure.

I was going to upload the pics here but looked like I can only do 4 pics per post so rather then make 5 posts I'll just send the link. All the updated pics are on the second page which is this link:

I'll be looking forward to this release.

It been over a decade ago, but I had a nice visit down to El Centro to pick up some freight going to 29 Palms. Required an escort at El Centro, as I had to take the truck across the active runway and had an MP escort once I got to 29 Palms. One day's work = $400!!

I think I remember you telling me that story last year lol good story. I tell you my first time ever out to Cali and the day before the show I got some food bug and had a wicked case of "Mud butt" as my buddies were calling. I had no idea how I made that 2 hour long drive from SD to El Centro in a back of a mini van. Thank goodness it was windy that day and not hot at all.

Thats a pretty good job. This will be another fine addition to ther other naval bases people have been doing lately. Pretty creative to have it set up to do airshows as well.

Thanks NC. Have 3 more planes to go up on a stick and then we'll be complete. So far Boss jet went up on a stick.

We added two more planes to the plane park and have one more to go then fix the Photoreal to get it a lot sharper. So if anybody thats good with photoreal and wants to contribute let me know because i'm looking for help.

Well, being good is debatable. What do you have and what are you looking for? And how BIG are you willing to see the file become? I haven't checked the quality, but there is 6" imagery for the area, I think? So that should be "sharp" enough for you?

Well I had did about 10 mile by 10 Mile square. But its very blurry when your below 2 feet and like to have it sharper. It was my first attempt at photo real so I wasn't pleased with it. I was looking to expand out about 25 miles or so but my main focus is around the air field itself.

Here are some rough guesstimates, as the USGS site is being it's usual pain in the rear!

Where the NAF is located you have about 11, maybe 12 miles before you reach the international border on the south. You have about 18+ miles before you reach the Salton Sea on the north. That N-S is just about 1/2 a degree of Latitude. Going 25 miles out on the west and east side is about 7/8 a degree of Longitude. Based on what I've encountered before, for 1 meter cleaned and sharpened source, that would work out to between 13.5 and 14.5 gigabytes of source. That source would compile down somewhere in the 1/8 to 1/9 range. So your photo for the area is pushing 150mb or more.

If you want to "consider" 6 inch resolution, if it covers that far, then take the numbers above and multiply them by 36.

And photo is always going to be blurry; a.) when you're down low, b.) when you're going really, really fast, c.) when you're down low going really, really fast. There's just no way any system (any system!) could process the amount of data that photo scenery entails and try to keep some degree of sharpness.

If the USGS site decides to perform as it should... I've got a base area of 32.84x-115.7-115.65x32.81 that I will see what the 6" or 1' (there's both) files sizes are.

I ordered up the 2009 imagery at 1 meter to see what it looks like.

Just an update about source size, as the USGS site decided to work today...

Covering an area with the following coordinates; 32.84 and 32.81 by -115.7 and 115.65 or just the immediate area of the NAF in 6" source (2008 imagery) is showing at 2.1gb. Compile down, guessing around 250mb.

Finished some of the base housing. Have to do some of the other housing units along with the trailer park. Also need to complete the F-4 for the plane park.

Finished the F-4 and put her on a stick.

Our guy won't be in the scenery just used them to slew around to test the scenery. Although I do have pics of the enlisted guys coming in and out of the office.
