    basic stuff

    after several installs of FS9,
I have finally decided to ask about the extra icons in the main folder.
I am referring to the fs2000 and fs2002.exe icons
what are they for and why are they there.
    from what I can tell,
they fire up FS9 just like the fs9.exe
granted, I haven't spent the time to look closely,
but they all seem to function the same.
    sometimes the magic works.
    sometimes it doesn't.

I have often wondered about those exec files as well...and like you said, they simply start FS9. It's a head scratcher for sure.

They may be there for add-ons that are hard coded to look for a specific EXE file name but will work with FS9. Just a guess though from a very rusty programmer that has seen things like this back in the stone age of programming.

today, I did a lean and mean install of FS9
no frills, just for the Round the World Race.
got to keep those framerates down, you know.
then, I made a desktop shortcut using the FS2002.exe icon.
    so far, so good.

Yup, those little EXE files named FS2000.EXE and FS2002.EXE are in there for backwards compatibility.

If you noticed that both of them are just 33kb instead of the full 1.3Mb like FS9.EXE...
They are just "stub" .EXE files that redirect towards FS9.EXE. If you use either one of them, they just call on FS9.EXE to execute and start the program.

I have a Piper Archer - I think it was by Flight 1 which on initial install looks for FS2002.exe. There were subsequent patches which made it a true FS2004 model.
