    Question Research help...

    To all,

I'm having a very difficult time finding performance tables for two F4U Corsair models - The F4U-2 nightfighter and the F4U Corsair Mk. II, the clipped-wing version.

I would assume that both had slightly degraded performance and ceilings, the former from more weight, and the latter from its wings being clipped, though accounts of British pilots I've read indicate that its rate of roll was increased slightly.

Could anyone point me in the right direction here?

The F4U-2 was a conversion of the F4U-1 with the Radome on the starboard wing and the outside 50 cal machine gun removed to balance the weight.34 were built.

    Talon,

    Which F4U? The -1, -1A, or -1D?

The F4U-2 was converted from the F4U-1

F4U Corsair Mk. II was converted from the F4U-1a

I saw that the F4U Mk. II was a conversion of the Mk. Ia. I would assume that it would have a slightly reduced weight, but a slightly reduced ceiling as well.

    Thanks,

    Thanks,
I may not be able to help you with the F4Us but I'll be looking for the nightfighter when you get it done. Be a worthy opponent for the Judy, Zero, and Jill night interceptors.

The last 150 of the 510 MkIIs were equivalent to the F4U-1D, the rest F4U-1as, if that's any help Rami.

    My two cents worth...

    From da book I have:

    Quote
"Goodyear began delivery on the FG-1 in April 1943, similar to the F4U-1, but without folding wings. Brewster's F3A-1 Corsairs began appearing July 1943. Many minor modifications were made, including F4U-1B with wingtips clipped so that they could fold inside the smaller hangers on British carriers. A night fighter version had been proposed as early as November 8, 1941, and the Naval Aircraft Factory converted a dozen Corsairs to F4U-2 with a radome on the starboard wingtip, and two guns deleted. On October 31, 1943, over New Georgia, one made the Navy's first successful radar-guided interception."

I assume the -1B clipped wings was modded from the -1A.

Book doesn't have specs specific to the -1B or -2 models. The best I could do.
