Is there anything I should know about AB squad aircraft?

I not sure if I am remebering this correctly, but I seem to recall some people had reservations about AB Squad aircraft. Is there anything in particular I should know about this group, or am I remembering a problem that doesn't exist?:costumes:

    Thanks for your imput!

The propeller is just a big fan in front of the plane used to keep the pilot cool. When it stops, you can actually watch the pilot start sweating.

    Thumbs up Yes, forget...

...that you ever heard of that site. Delete anything that you downloaded there and run a deep scan of your hard-drive with the best AV program you have. It is a pirate site that contains stolen versions of work from other sites, including the work of many folks here at the Outhouse. Many downloads contain malware, viruses and trojan droppers. We do not even talk about them here.

We don't have reservations about that site, we condemn it.

Roger that, thanks for the warning. Good thing I asked before downloading any of their aircraft. It's a shame since there are some aircraft on their website which I would really like to have in CFS2 that I have not seen anywhere else...oh well

...you found there is available elsewhere on reputable sites where the work was posted by the original designer.

All of his aircraft are available elsewhere under their actual author's names. Any that you would like and cannot find, post a question here on the SOH and somebody has a link or the aircraft in one of our downloads.

The only aircraft I saw there that I really wanted was the Tupolev Bear, which I found here. It turns out it was an FS2002 version, that did come with all the right files including a dp. After modifying the panel, sound, and aircraft cfg's so the plane would show up, the plane still had an error message in CFS2 saying it could not be visually displayed. I checked the model folder and everything was fine there, so I'm guessing that it simply wont work in CFS2. Oh well. If the original doesn't work, I'm guessing the AB copy doesn't either. Not a big worry for me really, I can live without it:costumes:

Hey RR, did you check the Sound.cfg to see if it is aliased to an Aircraft you don't have? That and the Panel.cfg. Both will cause aircraft to Not Show Up.

For my D/L's Search for both Pen32Win and AF=Midway. There are also files in the Archives under AF=Midway.

I replaced both the sound and panel cfg's and it didn't have any effect. I'm guessing that the problem is the model file itself.

    Lightbulb Rooster, try....

...running the MDL file through the CFS2 MDL Converter at this site:

    http://www.microsoft.com/games/combatfs2/

It will sometimes correct the problem you are having.

IF not, it can certainly be made usable by running the original MDL file through MDLC available here at the Outhouse......or maybe one of our converter experts will do it for you. It's an Alpha Oldie isn't it?

I tried using the MDL converter on the microsoft site, but that didn't work. I'll try using the MDLC here at SOH tomorrow. BTW, do you have a link for the MDLC here at SOH?

    Thanks for your help!

Been trying to get the ALpha Oldies Tu-142 Bear to work...and nada! Air, config, panel, and sound are all fine. The MDL file will not read in anything I have tried. MDLC, MDLconvert, CFS2...nothing!

But fear not....I think I have found you an even better Bear than the old AS one (which from the pics I have found of it is a really really dated model originally made for FS98). Give me a day or two and I will let you know where I stand on getting a Bear into your hands.

EDIT: Here's what I have thus far. I grabbed Rey Lopez's FS2002 Tu-92/142 Bear, dropped in the config and DP files from the Alpha Sim Tu-142 and the Air file from the conversion of Manfred Jahn's Super Connie that I did. The result is a much better looking plane, with full engine start ups, and decent flight characteristics. Will have to do some research on the Bear's performance and try to get this one dialed in. Also need to add some weaponry to the DP file...no point in having a bomber with no bombs.

If you "google" absquad, Vista and IE7 with my Symantec Endpoint firewall and AV shows it as an unsafe website.

I have the Modern Russian Pack installed, and will be using it to equip the Bear. Will be a few days as this week is looking to be hectic...Wife moves from hospital to Rehab Facility tomorrow morning, meetings with agencies to finalize coverage for her continued rehad.

I have found an even better Tu-95 Bear. This one is an FS2004, Gmax version with full animations and a VC. Before I get started on a conversion of it, I will e-mail the maker for permission to do a conversion and an upload.

The one I have been working on, the Fs2002 on by Rey Lopez, is simply showing its age and is lacking some animations, has no VC, and does not give frame rates that are really usable....on my system (P4 3 gig, 2 gig RAM, 512 Meg video) I am only getting in the mid 20s in external view in Free Flight...not good enough!

UPDATE: Got the FS2004 Tu-95 quickly converted...and WOW! Frame rates are 2 to 4 times as high as the other one. THE VC is AMAZING! Full animations (other than VC animations). Specular shine...which needs taken down a bit. When sitting on the runway, Shift W will extend a ladder and put wheel chocks in place....the engine access panels don't open like they do in the unconverted model...lost them in translation...no biggie. Have the prop texture fixed. The air and config files are super smooth! Bomb Bay opens on the canopy key (Shift C). The detailing on this plane is superb.

    Extremely good.....

    ....news!

I've seen a couple of these up close, and they were both very, very highly polished, no paint.....in service aircraft, not airshow types. :d

These were the Bear Bs (1960s) in the bomber and maritime bomber configurations that you don't even see photos of today. They had the new duckbill radome and three dual 23mm turrets (tail, dorsal and ventral). The dorsal and ventral turrets were remotely controlled by gunners in the blisters either side of the aft fuselage. Those two turrets were, I believe, totally retractable when not in use, and could be slaved to radar control.
They often tracked intercepting fighters in those days with the turrets, making the F102 pilots out of northern Japan very nervous. They also liked to flip-off the US pilots. That was the Cold War. :costumes:
