on with a strange bird in a multiple sense

Pretty sure it is the Laird Whippoorwill of 1928.
that's pretty right!
Any idea about the meaning or origin of that strange name?

It's a bird, Uli, and this pretty well explains how it got its name !

Thanks Uli.
How about this funky little runabout?
From a country we don't get too many mysteries from.
Assuming the interplane connection visible is the rod connecting the upper and lower ailerons, there can't be a huge number of unstayed biplanes from which to chose an identity for this pretty little thing.
Changing the subject, has the forum format changed overnight? The screen now seems to have a light/dark grey and green/orange background with a white text box. If so, I have to say that I find it much more user friendly to my old and tired eyes!
Nothing changed here, Mike.
That's wierd. It's now returned to what it was before - so I can't even take a screenshot and post that. And before anyone asks, I haven't touched a drop today!
... it suffices to clean the barrels for the new season

I also found a change of the site's colours.
Right at the bottom of the main page, underneath Community Forums, there is a colored line.. with a theme selection block on the left. This morning, it was set to 'CombatFS/CFC (fluid), which is a dark overall colour for the site, I changed that to SOH Default (fluid), which is the blue & white colours, & all was good again. I have no idea how the colour change happened.

SOH Default Fluid was broken so I made SOH CombaFS Fluid the default style for the forums until I fixed the issue. Edit posts and posting images was broken but now should be fixed.

Thank you, Dave. My sanity remains intact! However, I have to say that I rather liked the style of the temporary format.
Our little flyer was constructed in 1934 and hails from Austria. One of several builds from this designer.
Ahh, on page 230 in the "bible" about Austrian aviation (Luftfahrtzeugbau in Österreich) it says this is the Siedek KS.3.
It is the Siedek.

Now I am curious about Luftfahrtzeugbau in Österreich. Can't have too many books!
Some rare and interesting aircraft in the book, Kevin. One earlier biplane of Herr Siedek had its engine literally inside the propeller and there is even a technical drawing of this in the book. But it is written in German!
Here is a more modern type and in colour.
Well if this one doesn't lure Walter out of his lair, Robert, I don't know what will !
Now, Mike, this little plane might be rare but it is not a one-off, it was even built in a (small) series.
According to my information this trainer was the last design of the company and was scaled-down from a four-seater quite popular in Europe then.
Not my scene at all, but how about the Wassmer WA-80 Piranha ?
It is the Wassmer Piranha, the scaled-down version of the Wassmer Wa-51, which was the first series-built aircraft of composite material ( would have been my next clue).
Over to you, Mike
