Hmmm, found another pic here - didn't realise it was only a single-seater - seems a tad extravagant ! Now there's a challenge - apart from the military - are there any other single-seater light twins ? ( apart from those microlight horrors with lawnmower motors)

  2. #7502
No takers yet? Okay, this photo is dated 1956 at Love Field, Dallas. I find it hard to believe this aeroplane was still in service then.

A Fokker F.32 of Western Air Express -indeed, a rare bird in 1956 !

Yes you did Mike; it's the Caudron C180.

OK Ferry, over to you.... (and I'll forgive you for calling a tortoise a turtle !)

Well, it's hard enough to translate Dutch animals names to English! Usually I first need to find the official Latin name and use that to find the correct English name. Sometimes the Dutch and English names are quite different... And to us all 'reptiles in a box' are called 'Schildpad' (Quite litterally 'Toad in a shell'.), we do not use seperate names for land and sea turtles.

Anyway, here's a pretty generic looking GA aircraft:

That's a very Mooney-ish looking tail but as for the rest I haven't a clue. I bet that beacon right next to the glass roof causes issues when flying at night though! :isadizzy:

    Hi Ferry :salute:
If you would say this is an IAR-823 from Romania, I will believe you (maybe the prototype?).

It probably is the prototype or first production model of the Iar-823 Wout! The original photo has the registration YR-NHE on the tail.

It looks exactly like a SPAD fighter, except for the passenger windows!

Still looking for something that will keep you busy for longer than an hour or so, maybe this oldie will do the trick..

Ferry's reaction said it was Dutch. Sure enough, a Joop Carley Canard.

    Subtle hint, wasn't it?

Yes, it is Joop Carley's Canard No.2. #1 crashed on it's first flight, almost killed Joop. #2 Didn't crash but it didn't fly very well. It was around until 1920, after that the history is unknown.

Joop is the man on the right, next to his wife. The other gentleman is Hein van der Burg, another early Dutch aircraft constructor, and his wife next to him.

This photo was taken only a few miles from where I live! There used to be a small airfield there, one of the first Dutch fields. It disappeared well before WW2 and nothing remains these days.
