Close enough....this is the Federal (Ryan Mechanics) CM-1 prototype.

Hmmm, looks Japanese but nothing I have with inline engines (and there were very few) matches.
It looks like an Arkhangelskii prototype, but a lot of details don't match with my references.
How about an Arkhangelski MMN? The nose glazing doesn't match the drawing I have, but everything else is very close, most notably the air inlets on the wing leading edge just outboard of the nacelles..
{Edit}....just saw your post Hurricane.....I was narrowing my search when you posted that. Great minds think alike I guess.
I thought MMN too, but...

Our mystery plane's v.stab seems larger than the MMN's now that I see your picture. I think you're on the right track though.
Not Russian, but there is a connection...
Okay, here we go. This is the Chengdu Yanhun III from China. One built in 1944 and patterned after the SB. Flew okay enough despite being made mostly out of wood!
Anyone have a photo of the Yanhun II?
Here is a much easier one...
It looks like the 1920 Catron & Fisk Sport Triplane.
Dave
another machine for you
Dave
Dave, a wee hint - if you leave the reg. on, it makes it terribly easy to google it and come up with the answer !
In this case, I recognised the RAE Zephyr anyway, (honest) but it is quite OK to photoshop out registrations, service markings, etc as long as you don't alter the structure of the aircraft.
Sorry guys, Thanks Lefty and please carry on!
Dave
Hmm, still smarting over Moses' Chinese horror - no mention of that in my Chinese tomes - BAH !
How about an odd chopper....
This looks like the Dorand DH. 011 of the early 50s.
Dave
It is the Dorand indeed - over to you again Dave.
Perhaps this one will be a bit more difficult than my last
Dave
Not heck of a lot to go on, Dave. American ? Thomas-Morse-ey ?
Certainly a difficult view to work from.
The machine is not American, Canadian or Italian.
It was a service type in modest numbers for its time.
It was powered by a 220 hp 6 cyl engine and comes from a manufacturer that is not obscure but is certainly not among the best known of its day.
This photo is on the web.
Dave
Has a German feel to me despite the roundels. Not sure at all. Would be nice to see the empennage if possible.
There are other images available.
This one may be of some use. If not, I will post another in a couple of hours or so.
