Thread: AH P-47D Razorback Released 4/3

message from the Dev on FB this morning -

Hello all and thanks to the many of you who have already bought the P47D.

This is just a reminder to READ THE MANUAL PLEASE. There is a lot of bespoke code and features in this product that need to be understood to make them work.

It is partly why there is also a long video which covers many of these features.

For example, there are comments flying around about how you can't open the canopy properly. There is a tubular bar across the front of the canopy marked in white paint : CANOPY CATCH. Try pulling it. If you can't be bothered use the big canopy handles which do open the canopy fully in one hit.

Happy to see it released today - but the reviews so far and the price are some cold water.
money’s tight here at the moment and I was in an either or between this P-47 and the F-86.
I really was hoping for some better reviews - probably would have paid their asking price.
Maybe she’ll see some patching or it’ll be reduced in a summer sale.

Inflation is driving up the pricing on everything these days. $35 seems on par with the current direction of everything else. My insurance, utilities, fuel, jumping 20% to 30% above previous cost. Therefore one must be selective on software sims when it comes to hobbies. Textures do look compelling on this one.

    Where is the Mossie?
Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken.

Interesting that they specifically talk about the RAF getting P-47's and naming them Thunderbolts but apparently include no RAF liveries?
Still US$41 from Orbx for UK customers...unless it gets rave reviews (which it isn't) then no sale.

I am worrying about the upcoming Lancaster...

Jan Kees, if you're okay with some constructive criticism - the cowl ring looks like it's painted a shade of gunmetal grey in your screenshots, but it should be the same black as the tail stripes (same paint, applied at the same time). Also, the name artwork "Big Bastard" should be red instead of black, based on all of the profiles/artwork I've seen.

I got it for a few dollars off using my saved-up points at Just Flight, and I just spent an hour and a half with the aircraft this evening. Here are some of my observations:

Overall, I generally like the modeling and texturing, however the bare metal examples look overally dark to my eye. The 'Bonnie' paint scheme is one of my favorites for the P-47, but I'm not a fan of the way in which its been depicted in this product, with the paint having extremely heavy and non-purposeful scratching over every inch. Looking head-on or from the rear of the aircraft, it's very noticeable that the canopy and upper turtle deck are modeled fatter/spread wider than that of the real aircraft, and the turtle deck/spine of the aircraft isn't sharp like that of the real aircraft (what gave it the name 'razorback'). The throttle lever is of the "bicycle grip" twist type as used with gyro sights like the K-14, rather than the two earlier reflector gun sights modeled. The Mk.8 gun sight is missing the ball inside the level (a pity, since that level/float would be nice to use for heads-up flying). Republic painted the cockpit of these aircraft using 'dark dull green' paint (FS34092 being a close match), where as the cockpit color used here with the AH models is lighter and is much more yellow-based (it looks like it has been matched to the inaccurate interior green paint used in the old restoration at the USAF Museum). There is a heat vapor effect applied up by the waste-gates (that appear closed), and it would be neat if there was some coming out the turbo hood (where all of the exhaust exits when the waste-gates are closed and where some still exits even when the waste-gates are open). The exterior sounds are okay, but the interior engine sounds leave a lot to be desired (I'll be looking to swap in a different sound set if I keep flying it). The flight model seems fairly generic/good-enough, though I need to spend more time with it - the stall speed seems quite a bit lower than expected.

All of the liveries look dark. There is also a noticeable audio looping from the cockpit. It's very midrange sounding for that big motor. The tail wheel castoring animation only moves to one side and the small wheel does not make a solid point contact to the surface. I have not read the manual, but there does not appear to be a way to adjust the alieron trim outside of a hot key. The trim wheel does not turn. Of course these are just minor niggles that I suspect will be addressed in future updates.

Hi John, no worries with the criticism! These were shots of my very first flight of my very first attempt at painting the beast, just before I was off to bed. It is nowhere near finished, for one I agree with you that the bare metal looks way too dark, it's as if the entire aircraft is made of titanium or something like that. There are lots of other niggles as well, most have been mentioned already, so it is not a ' oh wow, this is great' model, but it's a P-47, so difficult to resist for me.

For those of you who are not happy with the engine sounds (I've heard the engine sounds on a YouTube video, and I thought they sounded very tinny), why don't you replace them with the Blackbird Corsair or FlyingIron Hellcat sounds, as they have better quality P&W R-2800 engine sounds. I know some of you have done this for the Aeroplane Heaven P-51D (which has the worst engine sound quality of any MSFS WWII fighter, in my opinion) by replacing AH's sounds with Asobo's Mustang sounds.

About sound and opinions, here is a growing topic about AH P-47: https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t...eleased/636786. Recently, someone who creates sounds promised to make an alternative set of sounds for the P-47. That would be great news for unhappy with AH sound:

    Hi everybody,

    It’s Matthias from FSVisions.nl :grinning:
As some of you maybe know i am the developer of some freeware sound packs for the HPG H135 and H145, also i was involved with the sound pack of the Payware HPG H145 itself.
I have a huge collection of self recorded warbird sounds incl lots of the P47D itself.
I will release a freeware sound pack for this bird within one week, it will be a package with as much sounds as possible.
I keep you all updated as much as possible,
Greetings and happy flying everybody! :hugs:

    Greetings

a bit more TLC for the Jug, made the metal lighter and changed quite a few other details. We're going in the right direction I hope, what do you think?
