Thread: Kursk VVS Campaign Released!

    Yakitty-Yak.. (Don't talk back!)

    I have discovered a couple of problems with Thicko's Yak-7. 1. The AI wingmen crash on take off and 2. the alternate textures at Start will not initialize when the Player is using one. Does anyone know solutions? Maybe Maxstuka is considering work on these models? If no solution is found, I'll have to air-start my Yak-7 missions; 6 missions so far. I have a feeling this model and variant will be important in the campaign missions to come too.

    Lightbulb Just an idea:

    Yo Wolfman;

    Load the mission, select "chase view"

    Adjust the view so you can see (from behind) the offending wing-men.

    Look carefully (or maybe run FRAPS?) during takeoff - what do you see?

    Might give you a clue.

    Does the wing man directly behind you also crash?

    Yes - air-file?
    No - maybe rough terrain on the right side of the runway? (empty beer cans & liquor bottles?)

    Lastly ... train your wing-men better & don't let them fly drunk!

    Yes, in the photo you can see Lev-1 & 2 going nose down into the dirt. I managed to hit X and warp out before 3 and 4 joined them, They later flew into each other on the first Attack command.

    Anyway, the same take-off-crash routine is duplicated by Thicko's Yak-9 too!

    Update:

    I've been lazy the last couple of weeks, but am now back on it. Currently I am working ona mission where one of the goals is to shoot down a German ace - Maj Rudolph Resch - with 93 air victories. I started off using the Yak-9, but I had to air start it and it has too little ammo to engage bombers and a fighter too. So I switched the mission to utilize the La-5F.

    I am up to 11 July in the northern sector with 21 missions finished and tested. Moving on...

    Weekly Campaign Update:

    I have completed the first four missions of the opening battles on the southern part of the Kursk salient. I have flight and mission tested one already and hope to do the same with the other three tonight, before moving on to building the next missions. I'll try to get some decent screen shots.

    The German airfields from the download I am using for the Kursk bases, are so bare, I had to add a lot of facilities: hangars, AA positions, HQ and radio buildings etc. Then, I had to add parked aircraft, AA guns and vehicles. I will include the layouts in the campaign download.

    The first four missions are Soviet dawn strikes on two of the Kharkov area airfields. Your Pilot will be the flight leader in either an IL-2 or a La-5. The Pilot's opponents: beaucoup FLAK; bf-109s or FW-190s that may or may not be on CAP or take off, randomly each time you fly the mission; limited dawn visibility.

    The Yak has its CG set too far forward making it nose heavy. I'm not sure if this is set in the airfile and the config file, or just the config file alone. Anyway, you can hand edit the config file and give it a try.

    I found a download under Russian Aircraft with alternate airfiles for Thico's Sov planes and they fixed the problems. It was by Oglivie.

    That sounds very exciting, SW07! Glad you found a solution for the Jaks!

    Two missions turned into four: I did strike missions on 2 German airbases using Il2s. Then I decided to duplicate them but with the Player in an escort/interceptor = 4 missions Then, I decided to have 4 more missions, based on the first 4, but with an increased German fighter response.

    In the screenshot below, I had just had a Bf-109 shot off my tail by a friendly fighter and had laid some 'eggs' on a row of parked aircraft at Kharkov-Osnovo airbase just after dawn. I had to lighten the picture some so you could more easily see.

    Update:

    This week was a slow one for me. I flight tested all the missions I built over the past week. I built and flight tested 2 more: One was an attack on a German reinforcement column. In the other, the Germans are attacking your base and you've got to take off and try to intercept them.

    Except for the Soviet counterattack, I think I am finished with the missions for the northern, Orel-Kursk sector. For the past 2 weeks I've been working in the southern, Kharkov-Belgorod sector. A total of 33 missions have been completed and flight tasted.

    My latest monstrocity

    Just finished a rather large mission with 44 aircraft, 60 vehicles and 262 infrastructure objects. Screenshots to follow after test flights.

    [strings]
    "title_string"=A_Kursk-S_Il2-Armored Column Attack-06-1E
    "summary_string"=Dobroe utro (Good morning), comrades. This morning our squadron has been tasked with blunting the spearhead of an enemy armored attack in the center of our lines. Zhelty; you, Krasny and Zeleny will take off at 0740 hours. Climbing to 7,500 feet, link up and fly on a heading of 149 degrees for 39 miles to RP-PAVEL. From PAVEL, proceed another 15 miles due south until you make contact with the advancing enemy columns in target area ZTs--RYS', encompassing the 6 mile radius around your next ref point, RP-LEONID. Attack and destroy as many tanks and armored combat vehicles as you can with your heavy weapons and then turn your cannon on light-skinned vehicles and infantry. Once you've expended your ordinance, reassemble at RP-NIKOLAI and return to base. Good hunting!

    "objective_string"=The 291st ShAD ([Ground] Attack Aviation Division) attacked the enemy with a determined intensity. Massive attacks, involving 82 Il-2s and 122 fighters. attacked the advancing German armored columns with rockets, bombs and cannon fire from as low as 300 meters (1,000 feet) off 'the deck.' On this, the 6th of July, Soviet 2nd Air Army lost twenty two Il-2s and the next day thirteen more. The Supreme High Command (Stalin) was informed that the the decision to utilize mass formations to attack was the correct one. Also that the Germans were now being forced to pull fighters from 'free hunting' to escort their own attack bombers to the target and back. [Note: The number of aircraft, vehicles and other ground elements in this mission is greatly reduced to facilitate CFS2 mission play-ability.]

    "intelligence_string"=The enemy is throwing all he has into breaking through our lines in the Oboyan- Korocha sector. Your targets are on the Nazis' right flank, just SE of Korocha. Your main threat will come from the intense ground fire, one would expect from 2 to 3 mechanized battalions and their organic FLAK units. You will probably encounter a CAP over the target area as well. A squadron of Yak fighters from the 294th IAD (Fighter/Interceptor Aviation Division) are assigned to fly high cover for you. They will rendezvous with you at RP-PAVEL and break off at RP-NIKOLAI on conclusion of your attacks as you return to base. The weather looks good for now with light winds and scattered clouds above 8,000 feet. Visibility is 12-15 miles.

    Another mission flight tested:

    1020 hours, 8 JULY 1943, Southern (Voronezh Front) Sector:

    [strings]
    "title_string"=A_Kursk-S_Il2-Halt the Breakthrough-08-2C
    "summary_string"=Dobroe utro (Good morning), comrades. This morning our squadron has been tasked with smashing an enemy spearhead in the Oboyan sector of the front. Zubr, your flight will fly left flank at 5,000 feet, while Ezh leads the squadron attack. Take off is at 1018 hours. You will fly on a heading of 310 degrees for 33 miles and rendezvous with your fighter cover at RP-VOLGA at 1030 hours. From VOLGA, move in formation with Ezh SW 7.5 miles to RP-PECHORA, from where you should be able to identify your targets. Attack them furiously to the expeniture of your rockets, bombs and gun ammo. Otherwise when Ezh transmits the signal: TAIFUN-555, you should then break contact and reassemble at RP-IRTYSH and return to base to rearm for your next mission. Good luck, comrades!

    "objective_string"=According to reports of 2nd Air Army, attack aircraft from the 291st ShAD (Attack Aviation Division) operated in groups of 18-20 aircraft, escorted by 10-12 fighters. Making some 520 combat sorties, they destroyed or damaged dozens of Axis tanks and other vehicles. Luftwaffe fighters themselves conducted 37 air engagements against the Soviets, shooting down 25 Il-2s and 6 escorts. Here is one wave of the 291st's attacks.

    "intelligence_string"=The enemy is making significant gains in the 6th Guards Army area. Your shturmoviks are targeting a reinforced panzer grenadier battalion, penetrating our defenses and advancing SE of Oboyan. Our forces are hard pressed to slow, let alone stop their advance. The Nazi force will undoubtedly be covered by at least a squadron of fighters. Your fighter cover should keep them at bay. You can also expect intense ground fire in the immediate vicinity of the enemy columns. The weather over the front this morning is good with light, scattered cloud cover from 9,000-12,000 feet and calm winds.

    "player_aircraft_name_string"=Ilyushin_il2-HC-37

    "airfield_string"=URSS_Novy Oskol-Solonets

    Update

    And with some breaks in my work I've Completed 36 missions and flight tested 31. My work on this project will slow as I promised to start helping to rebuild Maskrider's Philippine Bases in GSL in June. It is now June, so... I'm going to begin with Clark Field... I will continue to post updates and screenshots to the Kursk project as I make them.

    A Request:

    Could one of our infrastructure builders please make a Soviet T-34c, 76mm-gunned. medium tank or direct me to a site where I can find it? I have a T-34/85 but it's too early in the war to use it.

    That would be great Aussie:

    No "rushin" then, I can wait a couple of days and see what other readers have to often, if they'd stop Stalin. No, seriously though; if you do it are you going to upload it yourself or should I just include the files in my campaign pack? I like the look of your model.

    I have done almost all the Philippine GSLs I promised to do,so now I'm jumping back to the central USSR European plain in Mission builder. Back to day 2 of Operation Zitadelle on the southern sector. it would be great to have that tank for Soviet counter attacks and such.

    Cheers:
