New Video Card for MSFS 2020

I am thinking about throwing down the bucks for a new video card (GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER 8GB GDDR6) so I can start to enjoy MSFS 2020.

I'm currently running the following specs:

Operating System: Windows 7 Professional Edition (64-Bit)
Motherboard: ASRock Z170 Professional, Intel LGA 1151
Processor: Intel 6th Gen Core i7 6700K (4.6GHz Overclock) Quad Core
CPU Cooling: Corsair Hydro Series H80i GT Liquid Cooling
    System Memory: 16GB Kingston DDR4 SDRAM 2666MHz
Graphics Processor: 8GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070, PCI Express 3.0
System Power: 850 Watt Corsair RM Series Power Supply
Sound Card: 7.1 High Definition Integrated Audio
Primary Solid State Drive: 1TB Samsung EVO 850 Solid State Drive (SSD)

I'm currently getting in 30ish FPS range, and the refresh seems to takes a bit. Any thoughts or experience with this 2070 Super card? Primarily, does anyone believe ther the performance increase I'll get with the 2070 Super will be substantial over the 1070 I am running now?

    Thanks

    Kent

You're actually running better specs than me, but I'm still getting about the same frames. The trick I found was to set the graphics with a mix of high for things that are really visible, and then dial back things that take a really close look to see a difference.

I wouldn't bother getting a 2070 now, wait a little bit and get a 3070 for less money that will blow the 2070 away.

    According to ;

A W10 OS is necessary, even for minimum requirements. So I would start there.

I picked up between 5 - 10 fps by turning off Vsync in the options. I actually wasnt looking for FPS increase just I had heard that Vsync cures the 0x00005 CTD issues some were getting ( it did btw ). Far slower machine than yours but getting around 35 fps up from 25. W10 though.

For me I'm looking at an upgrade half way through 2021 when the game will most likely be hitting it's straps.

The 3070 comes out on the 29th of this month. They may be hard to find for a little while, but buzz is they will be available in much greater quantities than the 3080 has been so far.

Also, AMD is announcing its new graphics cards a week from today. If their performance vs. the RTX cards is as-rumored, demand will drop for the 3070 because some percentage of customers will opt for AMD instead.

If you buy a 2070 Super today, demand for ANY cards during the current shortage is such that you'll pay full price, so you'll pay as much as you would for a significantly faster card if you can just wait a week or four.

And yes, you'll still need to upgrade to Windows 10. But there's really no reason to stick with 7 in 2020.

Thanks for the responses, everybody...I realized after reading some of the comments that I messed up and listed Win7 (which my rig came with when new) as my OS. I actually have been running Win10 since 2018.

I think you've convinced me to wait for the 3070 release!

    Thanks,

    Kent

Happy to see that you have W10. Anyone else using MSFS2020 on W7?

My philosophy with FPS is; use it if you have problems, not as an end by itself. Human eye is very easy to trick into seeing fluid motion.

If 24 fps was good enough for Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, it should be good enough for most MSFS2020 flying. Of course, if your thing is making slalom on NY 52nd street between lamp post...

As far as I know, you can't use MSFS 2020 on Win 7. It's too tied into the Windows Store and other aspects for it to work.

I've got it running beautifully at 4K on mostly Ultra with a 4790K, 2070 Super, and 16GB with 2x 1TB SSD's and a couple hard drives (I use the hard drives for file storage and audio recording)... but, yeah, I'd wait and get a 3070 or 3080 at this point... Big North America update was just announced last night

Looks like Direct X12 on the way.
MSFS2020 'till now was very CPU limited.
Now the upcoming AMD Ryzen 9 5950X and the new Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 are strong candidates for new (but pricey) system builds.

The AMD chip has apparently now broken the 5 GHz barrier.
