The original tool did not work (following from an old thread). Going from a quick skimm of the thread, it sounds like the mos editor format is the underlying problem. It may be that the later mos editor (in the terrain sdk??) is the one to use:

    Hi Clive,

The standard rgn2lso does not work! I had to write an app (in fact I have written a few custom apps) to do this for MAW and OFF - as Charlie says the SDK is incomplete - in many ways.

LSO's are for autogen models only - it dictates where the autogen models are placed for terrain tiles etc. Now the good news:

For facilities (as airfields are) you do not need an LSO file - only a mos file and a facility XML file that dictates where everything must be placed. For examples look in \facilities......you can edit and create these with notepad or a simple XML editor.

Actually the lso2rgn.exe works fine its the mosaic editor that is messed up. Believe it or not the mosiac editor the shipped with the terrain SDK is for CFS4 which uses a different data format then CFS3. You can do one of two things, use the original mosaic editor which, I believe, came with the aircraft SDK; or you can convert the data. Mark has a couple programs for converting the data or you can do it very easily in a spreadsheet like excel. Here is what the data should look like:
    18
    6 5381.652 5635.066 90
    6 5320.166 5634.662 249
    6 5238.378 5638.062 120
    6 5893.517 5626.686 329
    6 6529.291 5640.485 306
    6 6473.086 5633.803 58
    6 6405.464 5635.326 122
    6 6589.685 5626.591 337
    6 6775.499 5625.688 179
    6 6710.638 5630.192 326
    6 6646.317 5625.888 76
    6 6077.477 5636.753 243
    6 6023.428 5626.92 350
    6 5942.664 5623.52 341
    6 6134.138 5629.515 268
    6 6344.952 5638.242 149
    6 6267.188 5641.725 194
    6 6205.397 5629.775 288
    1
    New Region
    4
    0 0
    0 8192
    8192 8192
    8192 0

As you can see it is ASCII format so you can just parse it in Excel to the same format and it should work. If you need more info just drop me a pm.

Yes the RGN2LSO tool works when supplied the correct format - but my point is to emphasize that the SDK is lacking as a working package - notably for LSO and water generation.

MS addressed the water issue but have not addressed the LSO issue I asked them to look at both but alas they only addressed the water. ( I also asked them to look at an editor for the voice files)

Looking at the LSO issue, my opinion is that it would be easier for MS to rather simply change the wee RGN2LSO tool to work with the format that the MOS editor outputs rather than recompile the MOS exe which is a far bigger program.

The MOS editor itself is a clumsy slow tool for generating LSO/autogen layouts and work with Fillmaps - I strongly suspect that there is a better more up to date MOS editor program that MS never released as it is now part of CFS4....and I'l put money on the fact that it also works with the RGN2LSO tool that was supplied .

My Autogen tool (and a similar Facility tool) work by allowing the user to place objects in rows, blocks, singly or in random clusters directly over an image of the tile without the need for fillmaps and outputs the RGN format as Ed has outlined above. It used to take me a day to do one tile RGN with the MOS editor - now I can do it in 10 - 20 mins tops with the app I have written. Hence the main benefit of my apps is that of convenience - saves time - and is the reason why I go on developing them.

These tools/apps will be released - Charlie if they are used for commercial gain I will never know about it so what's to prevent? In addition I must add that if any one wants to use them as is, simply contact me.

Johno_UK has an old version (very basic) and Ed is using a recent pre beta version of the Full Autogen tool and if he finds it self explanatory (I have not written a help system) then these tools can be released even sooner than December i.e sans docs.

Now all we need to do is decide on what to do with the MS supplied water tools! My feeling is that we should package them up and have them available here on SOH at least as one controllable version.

    That scenery looks great!

Mark - can I just ask exactly what tools have been developed, for both OFF & MAW please?

    Hi Clive,
Sure - here are some pics of some of the tools I have created for OFF: http://off.oldbrowndog.net/tools.htm

These pics are of older revisions and not all are represented - the major custom tools in principle that I use are:

    1) Autogen

Places objects easily (point and click environ, in groups lines singly or randomly) for LSO creation - can handle up to 500 000 objects and you can generate these complex LSO's in minutes...

    2) FacilityGen

Similar to 1) but for Facilities - generates the Facility XMLs automatically.
Adds in the movement paths (including the runway path) and lights as required for objects that have lighting or move - even chimney smoke - one can create a busy airfield in minutes - again a visual point and click environ.

    3) LCFcombine

Adds/Swaps in extra landclasses into an existing theatre by a merge process of two LCF files - this is how I add in the WW1 front sectors, Somme, Verdun etc into the existing ETO without having to redo the whole of Europe.

    Thank you, Daiwilletti, very much!

Unfortunately, I can't go the Excell route, since mine doesn't work.

Maybe, after alot of begging and pleading, I can get Pat Pattle, to toss me a bone! I'll also check, to see if I have a copy of any other MosEditors.

This airfield I'm working on, easily needs over a hundred trees. Created the .rgn file, but in the MosEditor, had a little trouble editing my region entries...that I'll dig back into.

    Again, really appreciate the help!
