    Hi Marty:

    Install instructions for what?

My campaign is just in the planning phase with only 6 missions completed. I am using the bases from xavierb's campaign (links above) and probably will build a few more. My references mostly are gleaned from the book: "Air War Over Khalkhin-Gol" and Wikipedia sources for dates, locations, numbers and types of aircraft as well as the background for the missions themselves. .

I've got a ways to go yet. I am building missions for the Soviet side first, with the player flying by random choice an I-15 series biplane or an I-16 variant. Thus each engagement requires 2 missions be built. There will be a mix of fighter on fighter, bomber, bomber escort and ground attack missions in varied aircraft. Then I have to do the Japanese side.

    Cheers:

    Weekly Update:

I'm making slow, but steady progress. I have finished and flight tested 9 missions so far out of a probable 40-50 total for the Soviet/Mongolian side. I was having some problems with guns/cannon/ammo (resolved) and with radio comms and messages. It seemed that no mater which plane I flew, there were no radio comms between me and my wingmen and no background chatter from ai at all. I looked at dp files, cfg files and everywhere and finally noticed on the country.cfg the nationality needed to be USA, JPN, BRI or GER for the chatter to work. I had written in SOV. i changed it to USA and now my wingmen do answer when I relay commands. I may change it again to BRI, just to get less of a Yank accent.

The material I have is very detailed on dates, number of aircraft, unit and outcomes with losses but not so detailed for starting/landing bases and engagement locations. So in some cases I have to use a best guess. Thanks to all of you for your help and suggestions.

    Cheers:

    Hi Shadow Wolf,

another other source (which you nmay already have of course) is:

    Author: Dimitar Nedialkov
Title: In the skies of Nomonhan : Japan versus Russia May -Septrember 1939
    Publisher: Crecy Publishing

I bought a copy a few years back and remmber enjoyign reading it, but whether it'll help with starting/landing airfileds I don't know. I'll try and have a look in the next few days. It does have a lot of useful info based on a quick scan.

    Cheers,

One peculiarity: When I fly over one of the lakes in the Nomonhan region, I get this... sharp, rectangular shorelines. Now, I have done the usual and copied all my scenedb/world/textures to my main, cfs2 Textures folder. Still. I get these shorelines. The scenery is fine in all other respects. Anyone have any ideas how to fix this? Thanks...

    re: Another Nomonhan source

    Hi all,

I was looking at these Nomonhan sources to see which might be more helpful for campaigns, I'd have to say there is no clear winner although I'm inclining toward the "In the skies of Nomonhan" title in terms of detail.

I thought if anyone interested might be considering buying one of these books a quick summary might be helpful:

    +++++
    Author: Dimitar Nedialkov
Title: In the skies of Nomonhan : Japan versus Russia May -September 1939
    Publisher: Crecy Publishing
    Published: 2005 & 2011

    212 pages (including index)
of which 8 pages of aircraft profiles
    47 pages aircraft technical data
    more text based

    +++++
    Author: Vladimir Kolnetikov
Title: Air War Over Khalkhin Gol : The Nomonhan Incident
    Publisher: SAM Publications
    Published: 2010

112 pages (including index) - note these are larger pages than "In the skies of"
of which 18 pages of aircraft profiles
    26 pages aircraft technical data

A _lot_ more photographs. Better maps I would say.

    ++++

Overall hard to choose a better book, "Air war over" probably is the better intro and with the many photos more attractive (I'm a simple man, I like pictures!), but "In the skies of" is probably better for detail.

Shadow Wolf I'll send you a PM later.

    cheers,

    SW

    Polikarpov I-16 versus Nakajima Ki-27:

The scenery glitch with the lake shore (above) I am writing off as an MS error. I guess the designers of the CFS2 world map did not focus much attention on Mongolia for a PTO sim.

    Weekly Update:

    Hi:

I have done a total of 10 missions - 2 for each campaign mission - 5 for the I=15 and 5 for the I-16. I am currently working to fix mission 4 and 4a. These require a bit of trial and error work. The scenario has a regiment of I-15s and I-16s launching to intercept a squadron of IJAAF planes in Mongolian airspace. The Japanese planes flee, leading the SOVs into a trap, where they get jumped by a larger force of IJAAF planes. The "ambush" requires perfect timing, as I have to time the launch of the IJAAF planes, from their bases north and south of the ambush to meet the SOV planes at the ambush point. Thus I have to build, test fly, adjust, test fly again, etc. I decided to do this one Rami style, a bit more complicated than an air start with spawning. Then, after the the ambush initiates, another regiment of Soviet planes, dispatched by alert forward air controllers, arrives just in time to save the day.

Also, the actual numbers of aircraft in this engagement was over 140. To make it CFS2 compatible, I cut the number of planes down to 70+. I just finished, what I hope will be after I test fly ithis afternoon, the last revision. Then I will move on to the 11 and 12 set of missions.

I anticipate building, as I said before, 40-50 missions total for a Soviet campaign of 20-25 random I-15/I-16 mission pairs. Then I will turn around and go through xavierb's Japanese based campaign missions and revise, replace or add my own to them. And for you ground pounders, I'll be doing a number of ground attack missions for both sides too.

I admit I've been lazy. I'm taking much longer to do this one than I expected, but I will get it done. I've already completed one of the supporting README documents - the campaign description - and while I work on the missions, I will work on the required downloads README.

    Cheers:

    I need a favor:

I need an airbase - Bain Tumen, Mongolia, N 48 06' 32" E 114 33' 52" , two, east and west dirt runways, elev (?), heading (?), length (?). I need this to base my 150th SB-2 bomber regiment to launch strikes against and be attacked by the Japanese. These are all the data I could find on this base and I would have to use my own meager artistic abilities to orient and select size and layout of the base.

There are much more talented airbase builders than I out there and I thought to put out the word before I roll up my sleeves and relearl how to do this.. Any volunteers?

Our great friend and wingman, UncleTgt in no time at all created a base = twin runways with 4 start points, refuel etc for the campaign. I populated the base with GSL infrastructure and am happily flying in and out of there. With his permission, I'll include it in my final product upload. I'll post some screenshots later.

Meanwhile, I'm still workin on that large mission. I have a new start point, thanks to UT, fine-tuned the altitudes and speeds of each flight and made some payload changes. Now I am working to get the escorts to link up at the rendezvous point on time. I'm doing this one so the player will also have a random chance at leading a bomber flight or a fighter-escort.

    Progress Report

I finished Mission 15 last night and this morning. I have to flight test it and 13 and 14 then I can claim to be halfway finished with the Soviet side of the campaign. Mission brief for 15:

    "title_string"=Khalkhin-Gol_SOV_CE_Bridge Bomb/Strafe-I-153c
"summary_string"=Dobry den, [ Good day] comrades. This afternoon we will finally have the opportunity to employ our squadron of the new I-153 in a ground attack roll. Kalinin, you and Pobeda will take off at 1500, climb to 8000 ft and hold on 036 degrees for 40 miles at a cruising speed of 150 kts to RP-1. There you will join up with I-16s from 70th IAP and a squadron of our SB-2M-103s, The Japanese are desperately trying to restore a badly damaged pontoon bridge, so they can evacuate their trapped forces. You and Pobeda are to attack both sides of the bridge site with your bombs. Then circle back and do as much damage as you can with gun fire on the backed up traffic. Expend your ammo effectively then reassemble at RP-2 , and then RTB.
"objective_string"=As the Soviet Command decided to battle-test these I-153 fighters, the cost of their victory began to climb as the Japanese troops defended the pontoons furiously. [Historical: According to Soviet sources, the enemy shot down 7 SB bombers, killing 10 crew members) and badly damaged 3 I-16s. The Japanese claimed 10 bombers and 35 fighters shot down as spoils. The Soviets reported burying 11 Ki-27 pilots, while the Japanese would not admit any casualties at all].
"intelligence_string"=The enemy will, undoubtedly employ his figters in number to oppose you. The SB=2M-103 bombers will have escorts from 70th IAP. But you, comrades are experienced fighter pilots. You will have to execute your ground attacks and cover each other. Expect moderate to heavy PVO (AA fire) as you approach the bridge construction site. The weather looks good with slight winds and high, moderate cloud cover. I won't kid you, this is a tough mission. That bridge is a well defended target. If we can keep them from rebuilding, the remnants of a division plus will be trapped. Good luck and come home safe.

    Update:

I have fallen a little behind, due to the fact that I spent 4 days in the hospital 10 days ago with an annoying infection, but I am well now and back to work again.

It looks like it's going to be a 25-30 mission campaign for the Soviet side. I have almost finished mission 19 - a medium bomber raid on a Japanese airbase. Once you get to the target, your escorts will have to deal with swarms of interceptors. I have yet to do the briefings for the mission and flight test it. It has moderate to heavy FLAK as well as enemy fighter that you will have to fly through. I then will do an alternate mission where you are flying as an escort for the bombers. Then I have 2 more medium bomber with alternate escort missions to build. After that, the final phase will be worked on.

I will publish this campaign separately from the Japanese campaign, For those, I intend to use XavierB's older missions as a guide for a re-do.

Overall, I've worked my way through 2/3 of the text I am using as a reference for the missions and think they are a good representation of the "incident." The previous mission is a massive dogfight/furball in which some 300 fighters took part. I scaled it down to 1/3 that number.

I have asked a friend, GearyMcS to repaint some of my USSR aircraft. If he can't, I'll try to enlist one of you to do the job for me. Either way, I am looking at a few more weeks for completion. I intend to make some informational videos to add to the campaign.

    Cheers:

My re-paint friend has a question for you experts: Some of the textures for some of the planes have a large amount of BMPs (25+) Is there a viewer other than DXTBitmap to see which textures he needs to re-paint? Or must he open each one individually using DXTBitmap?

He is doing three others for me too. I will upload them when I have the campaign is near finished.

    Rami,

You are welcome... I dont think it is going to be 30 missions long, since it will be semi-dynamic, ie: out of the 21 misions I've built so far, at least 6 are alternates for others. I am taking a short break from mission building for a while though. I am re-flying each mission built, fixing and fine tuning, taking screen shots and some videos to be edited later. Doing mission 1 now.

Also, I need a little help with the .air and .dp files of some of these older CFS2 aircraft. I can be specific if you want.

FYI: I am currently logged in as Administrator on my computer. For some reason, I cannot post pics, emoji's or use the bold/italics functions. I have to log in on my computer as another user in order to do those tasks. Strange?

I am just starting to build the last phase of the campaign: the Soviet offensive. it will take about 10-15 missions to complete. This phase will have an introductory video, a mix of fighter and bomber missions with: bombing, escort, ground attack and intercept missions.

Difficulties? Mainly they are with the terrain. Reference points are few and in most cases I have to guess the player's home base and from the maps in my book (which only show ground unit positions and advances) my best guess on the target location. This is no Pacific Island fo sure. I use XavierB's gsl layouts as much as possible.

I will try to capture and post some screen shots as I test-fly the missions.

    Cheers:
