Female pilots of the Air Transport Auxiliary

Female pilots of the Air Transport Auxiliary ferried aircraft from the factories to the squadrons during the war, if allowed they would have knocked the stuffing out of the jerries.

They really were the unsung hero's.
They flew all types of aircraft with minimal training on each type.

They flew in unarmed aircraft and I believe some of their number succumbed to attack by enemy intruders,

I met Mary Ellis, when I was a kid , she used to manage the local airfield (with her husband) ..... short version....
had taken bicycle ride over there to watch the planes ; someone had left the hangar doors open , ....
lady and a gent looking over a BA Swallow that was based there (G-AFGE) ... so I got caught and told to come here and see the aeroplane properly.
