    Bristol Beaufort

Over the last few weeks I have had several inquiries from Aussie flight simmers regarding the Bristol Beaufort. This has come about because one is nearing completion to flying condition in Queensland.

It has piqued their interest and they have asked if I knew of an FSX/P3D V4.5 model. The only one I know of is the old AlphaSim model from the late FS9 early FSX years.

My question after such a long preamble is anyone interested of creating one for FSX/P3D?

The Beaufort was used by the RAF in various roles early in WWII as well as the North African Desert war. It was also used as a Bomber by the RAAF with many built under licence by the Department of Aircraft production in Australia.

The Beaufort would be a nice addition to the hobby. I was meaning to convert the Alphasim one to FSX-native but the model is not very accurate. When I was at school our German teacher and head of the air cadets (which I was a member) was a Beaufort pilot who flew with 217 Sqdn from Malta. I'd really like to be able to do a repaint of his aircraft.

Sad to hear the old Alphasim model is not good enough, I was just considering to convert it for P3D with new 3D gauges etc.

It first appeared for Alphasim in either FS2000 or 2002 and was ported to FS9 and then to FSX so you can see it is a very dated model.

I certainly would appreciate a conversion! It might not be state-of-the-art 2020, but this looks pretty nice, and it'd be fun to explore what it was like to fly one of these, and certainly wouldn't be a terrible stopgap while waiting on someone to be inspired to create another one.

Wow that is good news. I remember going to an airshow in caboolture and seeing the work that had been done and what was to be done and thinking... holy moly there's some work required there. Knowing how fast the 2000's are going that was probably 15 years ago now. I seem to remember they were looking for funding from our state govt at the time who was more interested in casinos and mines... so nothing much changed !

The screenshots/download are/is of Dave Garwood's Beaufighter. The Beaufort FSX model quoted is very basic and the prop animations have not been fixed. Needs new props at least.

Sorry the Beaufort completely different aircraft than the Beaufighter, similar name but considerably different

edit* I see dave has already commented.

As for the "fighter", it work flawlessly in p3d v4 and v5, as for the "fort" is beyond dated, it was dated for FSX. It really needs a new model and vc to even match current standards

So I guess Dave knows that he has to model next, since he has many of the bits already completed for the Beau.

Only if you can talk him out of retirement. I have already sent him a PM and his reply was that he has retired from FS aircraft building.

The Sim-Outhouse link above is for a Beaufort, despite the Beaufighter shots above.

It looks good from the outside in P3D V5, but the prop animation is broken -- it looks like the prop is being viewed on out-of-sync film.

And while the exterior looks pretty nice props aside, the interior is definitely pretty basic.

Done some preliminary work on this (all yesterday and this morning....) and the prop issue can't be resolved just by a standard prop conversion; it requires a new model part. I've resolved it with a 'stolen' part but it will require a lot more work just to get the exterior looking reasonable, never mind the fossil VC..

Perhaps a better starting point would be the conversion of the AlphaSim Beaufort for CFS3, or the series of Beauforts created by William Renwick for CFS2 and recently updated by UncleTgt. All of these files are here in the SoH library.

Tried the CSF2/3 models; the CSF2 one is probably more accurate but very low polys. I've played around with the props and found that few Beauforts ever used full spinners so I grafted on the A26 props, slightly smaller and this is the result. The vc now looks workable but very basic. My next job - if I decide to go on - will be the textures, specs and bumps. But......!

That looks awesome Dave. I have a pilot's report on it, maybe I'll see how it flies compared to the that.

Bit wrong on last post - the Beaufort Mk.II has P&W Wasps and ? Hamilton Standard props and this model isn't accurate for the Wasp (the CF2 one is but...). Anyway, got another workaround of the prop problem and now all good. Got a VERY basic vc sorted but currently the engine nacelle bumps are giving me a pain! There is a black stripe on the top and bottom of each nacelle, but the nacelle bump maps work fine with FSX in DX9 but not DX10 (on my rig at least) so it's a shader issue by the looks of it. . Also happens in P3Dv4.5; pity because there's currently more functionality to the vc in P3D.

    VC - Basic

    Nacelle dark line in DX10/P3D

Any offers of advice gratefully received...!

Great Work Dave. The VC looks great. Looking forward to its release.

Thanks Pat. As regards the VC, I just wish I could get some more of it to work....!

Hmm you'd probably need to export from MCX to DAE or FBX format and then set it up in 3DSMax or Blender to get it where you want.

Got the Beaufort into FSX/P3D OK in general. Fixed some problems and done a paint of a No. 217 Sqdn aircraft as flown by my old German teacher Arthur Aldridge in the early months of the war. I'll do a couple more paints before finishing.

Just realised - nose letter should be 'B'.

One or two more bits to fix then I'll ask permission from Phil to upload.
