Looking for some stock game improvements

Please point me towards improvements to the stock game, if those exist somewhere.
    1) Specular shine enabled for the default aircraft.
    2) Best textures for the Pacific terrain.
    3) Any skins for N1J2? this particular plane seems to be unpopular with the skinners
    4) CAmpaigns, using the stock assets, or the minimum/easy addition of the new ones.
Would appreciate any other recommendations to enhance the PTO experience.

I really like PacTex2 textures. You will find them at Flightsim.com (there are 5 files, search for 'pactex2*' as file name in the search engine).

Try the "In the Army Air Force (AAF)" campaign by Allen:

There are tons of improvements for this game. Just spend some time browsing the Warbirds Library CFS2 sections here

There are very few campaigns that don't require downloads to take advantage of the many, many improvements by the SOH members. Usually, these would be the earliest ever made before there were many improvements available. A couple of exceptions would be TLoup's Vila campaign, and my 9th Fighter Squadron 49th Fighter Group in WWII campaign plus my Marine Fighting Squadron VMF121 which although they include improved planes, airbases etc., are self loading with only a few additional downloads required.

    Vila http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforum...id=44&id=17568
    9th FS http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforum...tid=44&id=2561
    VMF121 pt1 http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforum...id=44&id=21818
    VMF121 pt2 http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforum...id=44&id=21837

Talon, Shadow Wolf 07, Devil Dog 73, and Rami made a number of great campaigns and mission packs available here, but all will require lots of downloads. Worth it though so if you have the time, you might want to give some of them a try.

Regarding textures, it's a matter of personal preference. Lots of guys like the PACTEX series which is available at Flightsim.com. I prefer Dvslats /Aime Leclercq Pacific Textures Pt1, 2 and 3 available here.

I don't know what a N1J2 is. Did you mean the N1K2 Shiden-Kai? There are a couple of skins at Easykill skins site
    http://storage2.free.fr/DOWNLOADS/downloads_japan/ZIP/george343KO_oshi_10.zip
    http://storage2.free.fr/DOWNLOADS/do...ge343KO_10.zip

I'm not aware of any specific shined stock aircraft but you can set the shine however you want it with Morton's Mk_Mdl_V2.0 tool. Very easy to use.
    http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforum...tid=49&id=2243

You should also check out B24Guy's overhauled stock planes available here. They de-mirror the skins so no more reversed numbers.

    Hope this all helps.
    Cheers,

    Captain Kurt

    Hi

Nothing is wrong with the address. The reply simply didn't convert it to a link. Copy the address and paste it into your browser. It will download if you are already logged in.

Two of the earliest pioneers were C. (Clive? I don't remember now.) Burgess and Matthew Scott who produced, among others, campaigns for the Tainan kokutai (Saburo Sakai's old unit), the Marianas and Okinawa. These either use only stock items or provide upgrades (e.g. an extra airfield or two) that are minimal compared to the later great work by other people. I still have a soft spot for them because of their historical accuracy. I haven't looked in the library here but if they're not available, try the CFS2 campaign section at Simviation. They should be among the earliest entries, I'm guessing.

Thank you for recommendations, Roxane and Cpt. Kurt! Unfortunately I have some troubles with most of the mods.
I did install B24 Guy's overhauled models, but they do not have specular activated by default. I tried applying cfs2_overhauled_mdls_shined by OBIO, but those have couple of issues too (e.g., F6F's trim tabs are constantly in up position, N1K2 has mirrored textures again, etc.)
I could not find PacTex2 at FlightSim.com Are these the same? http://www.demons7th.com/pactex.html
Mk_Mdl_V2.0 unfortunately does not work under Win7-64
As for the campaigns, I would really love to enjoy all the new and improved content, but it is rather hard for me to locate all the required mods usually.

Regarding the N1K2 skin, I was hoping for something like this:
http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/local_links.php?action=jump&catid=60&id=1032 but for the stock model. As a poor man's solution, I tried color-correcting the default skin in GIMP (the best I can do, I'm not an artist at all), but I cannot convert it back into proper BMP without color artifacts, DXTBmp did not help me much Is there a tutorial somewhere? If I change color of the main skin (n1k2j_george_t), do I have to do the same for the damaged one (n1k2j_george_d)?

The "In the Army Air Force (AAF)" campaign should be self contained (needing no other downloads) but it may need B24 Guy's overhauled P-38 and P-39. It has been years since I messed with it.

DOSMdlc 2.0 will work for Win7 and up. You will need to use DOSBox Shine.bat. Not straight forward process but will work to change the Specular shine of aircrafts.
    http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforum...9&linkid=25224

As for DXTBmp. The format you save in has a big effect and I have found no format works every time for every texture but my go to is 565 or DTX3 for normal textures. 565 dose NOT support alpha so it can't be used for damage textures. For damage textures 555-1 DTX3 or DTX1

My advice is to save a normal .bmp from your paint program. Load it into DXTBmp and save it in one of the extended formats than reopen the just save extended .bmp in DXTBmp and see if the texture has too many color artifacts. If if too many color artifacts are on the texture start over with a fresh normal .bmp and use another extended .bmp option in DXTBmp when saving tell you find one that works.

As a last resort there is imagetool.exe by MS but I find it to be had to use as it destructive to textures anytime you change formats. This means you have to close and reopen imagetool.exe and the .bmp anytime you want to change the save format.

Yes you need to edit the damage texture too.

On the campaigns add-ons, look at Capt Kurt and Rami additions.
There are others as well, just not coming to mind right now.
    Most of theirs have auto-installers.
    It makes it much easier.

I'm not a big fan of VC cockpits so maybe some of the other guys who are can give you recommendations. My focus is always on the exterior model accuracy. For the 2D panels, there is a whole section in the Warbirds Library. Just go here:

    http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforum...hp?catid=46&s=

There you can scroll and pick what you like the most. The thumbnail images will show you what each looks like before you choose one.

    Some cloud choices here are:

    UncleTgt's Cumulus Cloudmix UT.zip

Thank you very much for recommendations!
I have another trouble now When I install the different water color tiles, from high altitudes I still can see the stock water color and boundaries of the square tiles. Anything can be done about this?

  18. #18
Try copying the all the bitmap files in the CFS2/SCENEDB/world/texture folder into the CFS2/TEXTURE folder.

The lowest/farthest ground terrain LODs do NOT use any textures we can edit. I asked about it for ETO and I was told by Rami to go to Setting > Adv Settings > Image Quality and lower Max Visibility.
