    USS Langley (CV-1/AV-3)

Just finished the KMR Graf Zeppelin and the Yorktown class carriers (just must do the readme and packing for the files), i started to do the next one....

    USS Langley (CV-1/AV-3)
was the United States Navy's first aircraft carrier, converted in 1920 from the collier USS Jupiter (AC-3), and also the US Navy's first turbo-electric-powered ship. Conversion of another collier was planned but canceled when the Washington Naval Treaty required the cancellation of the partially built Lexington-class battlecruisersLexington and Saratoga, freeing up their hulls for conversion to the aircraft carriers Lexington and Saratoga. Langley was named after Samuel Pierpont Langley, an American aviation pioneer. Following another conversion to a seaplane tender, Langley fought in World War II. On 27 February 1942, she was attacked by nine twin-engine Japanese bombersof the Japanese 21st and 23rd Naval Air Flotillas and so badly damaged that she had to be scuttled by her escorts.

The next project. Most of the work is done on the USS Langley as aircraft carrier. The much bigger part of work was the conversation to seaplanetender the USS Langley became in 1937. But even now....it is good on the way to finnish too.

Some screenshot from work till now.

USS Langley as aircraft carrier. Will come with some other ships from her timeline.

And some of the upcoming ships that will be in this package.

And the seaplanetender USS Langley (AV-3) as it looks till now. This will come with different deck layouts, because she became part of different missions in WWII.

Klaus is cranking out carriers almost as fast as Kazunori Ito used to crank out airplanes.

Lol.... its just the one of me that is going to the job (to lead my crew working...), the one of me that is living with my wife, the one of me that is sleeping for about three hours at night and the one that is doing the modelling for the ships (for the rest of the night)..... so me is four.

One step forword with the AV-3 USS Langley. New layout with P-40 on her decks.... that`s the load she was orderd to bring to her target at her last duty.... she was sunk by own crew after a surprise attack from japanese aircraft with these P-40 on board.

And now.... its time for a good cup of tee in the evening. (shi.... just saw another little mistake on the screenshot. The shipbell is hanging in the air with nothing to hold it.... )

Thanks Klaus, Just downloaded them and they look great.

Did you do something different on the deck for Langley and
Graf Zeppelin? On the other carriers you have produced it was fun to use the P3D avatar and wander around the deck but for these ships once you pop out of your aircraft your frozen in place.

Second question I assume the ship identified as USS C-2 Charleston is most likely really USS Charleston (C-22) the cruiser that served from 1905 to 1922 not USS Charleston (C-2) which served from 1888 until lost in 1899 and probably never saw one of those newfangled flying machines.

Did not do anything else as the other carriers has got too. Just the seaplane tender has no hard deck.... so you can not land on it. The Graf Zeppelin and the Langley carrier are all the same as the other carriers i did.

Someone else with the same problem ?

And you are right.... mistake on spelling on my side C-22 USS Charleston is the right ship name. From 1920 she was reclassified to CA-19

I tried again tonight, this time with the Langley and Graf Zepplin but with the versions with AC on the deck rather than the empty deck of last time. With Langley the avatar could move around the deck no problem but with GZ, On the stern it could move around OK but when I tried to move past the wires it was blocked, I taxied forward and got out but was frozen in place. Don't worry about it too much, the aircraft work fine on it so its not a big problem, just curious.

Another thing I am curious about, one of the ships included with Langley titled "USS_Phoenix_1919" I find very interesting, she looks like a modified Omaha Class Cruiser that has been turned into a mine layer. There is nothing wrong with it, just my search of wikipedia did not find any information on her, does anyone know anything about her history?

Langley's informal handle in the Navy when she was a carrier was "the old covered wagon."

I think I see an elevator in about the midships position of the Langley's flight deck. The hangar deck is to me very remarkable since it is essentially open air which must have created some problems for the mechanics working there.

Since the study of naval history is another one of my hobbies I have been trying to find some history on a USS Phoenix but came up empty. But I found one site that described an earlier design for the Omaha class, without the turrets and with a gun mounted on the center of each side of the ship, along with those features removed from from the Omaha’s in the 30’s and that description fits the Phoenix model very well.

Klaus thanks again for the great collection of ships you have provided us, the only thing missing are a few of the ww2 era light cruisers like Cleveland and Atlanta but you have been so complete with your carriers that I don’t see where you could slip them in, a project for someone else I assume.
