    Sikorsky S-56 / HR2S "Deuce"/ H-37 Mojave for FS9.zip

A new entry has been added to Add-Ons Library, category FS 2004 Military - Helicopters

Description: The S-56 was a revolutionary helicopter. It was the first production twin-engined helicopter and one of the first helicopters with retractable landing gear. It established World Speed, Altitude and Lifting records and had some very advanced features. Developed as a heavy assault transport for the Marine Corps as the HR2S, where it acquired the nickname "Deuce" (for the 2 that differentiated its designation from its predecessor, the HRS), the Army took interest and got its simplified H-37, formally named Mojave, into service first. The H-37A entered service in 1956 and the HR2S-1 in 1957. The last CH-37B was retired from the National Guard in 1974. An AEW version was developed for the Navy but it wasn't successful. In the early 1970s, Keystone Helicopters modified surplus airframes for civilian use but had little success. Both regular and wide screen panels are included, along with multiple models and skins depicting the XHR2S-1, YHR2S-1, XHR2S-1W, HR2S-1 (CH-37C), H-37A, CH-37B and S-56 in the authentic colors and markings of the U.S. Marine Corps, Army, Navy, Federal Aviation Administration and Keystone Helicopters.

Your efforts are greatly appreciated, I remember putting this one down on a wish list someone had placed in front of the community a long time ago. At last, we've got it. I experimented with it a little bit and found it installs in a trouble-free fashion in FSX Gold edition, flies well too. There's the usual very minor visual issue w/the main and tail rotors in FSX but considering what we got - and the excellent price for it - I am NOT complaining in the LEAST. Thank you AGAIN. This filled a yawning chasm in helicopter development in the '50s and '60s that was not otherwise depicted in our sim.

Glad you like it, and glad to works in FSX.

I wondered for a long time why nobody had modeled such a significant helicopter. Once we started working in the project we quickly found out! As I mentioned in the documentation, FS9 (don't know about FSX) is not coded to run helicopters with more than one engine. Other modelers have faked it in various ways, some by using an airplane flight model, and some by using a single engine flight model. Those tricks weren't useful for the S-56. There are reasons for that.

One reason we couldn't make it single engined in the flight model is the big, smoky start-up of those big, smoky R-2800s, so widely separated. It turns out that the sim located the start-up smoke where the engine(s) is (are) located, so we had to have two engines. That put the exhaust smoke in both locations where it had to be but revealed another problem - getting the second engine started became problematical. We couldn't put a start switch on the panel because the second engine wouldn't respond to it, and we couldn't put a shut down switch on the panel for the same reason. Hence the need to start and shut down from the keyboard.

The panel drove us to distraction because no mater how paired gauges are coded (as with start or shut down switches) they all only respond to the first engine. Some modelers of multi-engine helos have faked it by just using one of each engine instrument, or dual needle ones where it would be normal to have both needles read the same most of the time. But we wanted the panels to be as authentic as possible, and real S-56 panels used separate instruments for each engine in almost every instance. We knocked ourselves out trying to work around that before we found out that other developers, smarter than us, couldn't do it either and we finally realized that FS just won't allow it. So the panels show pairs of instruments, but all the gauges only report on the first engine.

It was a challenge! But we're pretty happy with the results and it's good to know that you like it.

I should mention that here is a thread about this project in the FS2002/204 General Discussion forum. Comments posted there are more likely to be seen than those posted here, since we visit the FS2002/2004 forum all the time but might not always think to check here.
