Do we have any fx files to simulate the grey-black smoke coming from a steam train? I'm looking for an effect where the smoke streams back over the moving train.

Something like this....but not so hard on the frame rates
MOVING trains.................smoke FROM MOVING trains...what is this alchemy?.....you'll be telling me next that people fly, and the earth's not square....
Ha ha, you're not asking much are you!
Well moving trains would be good, using tick18 ani or? As for smoke there are a few chimney stacks effects (Nanni's new cfs2 effects and LouieG's explsions at Simviation), which could be used/improved on, but I'm pretty certain it's not possible to have the effect move with the bgl in CFS2.

I suppose I assumed that a smoke effect could work in much the same way as one of the dust or snow effects for moving vehicles.
I don't know if it would work in CFS2, but Bill Lyons' old FS9 (or was it FS8?) Travel Air 2000 package includes a moving steam train with a smoke effect. Sounds too. Maybe you could adapt them for CFS2, or maybe they wouldn't even need any adapting. All the old Lyons payware stuff was later released on either AvSim or FlightSim (can't recall which.)
Hi All,
We all ready have one. See my post in Zeebrugge Naval Air Station Flanders post.

Not sure if this will work but how about the using the same files that are used to make the smoke effect from the smokestacks on ships?
Maybe it could be added as an EXTRA in the DP file for trains in Objects DP since there is no train DP in Scenery files?
Hi _486_Col_Wolf,
You are correct it is added as [EXTRA] in the objects DP file.
Today I sent Revenna a modified FX file. It also works well for the moving loco.
If Revenna wants a moving train on the mole he would have to install the modified BGL and texture files to the Veh. folder and change the UNIT type In the DP files.

B24Guy
Got it. Thanks B24Guy. Just as well its raining here....good weather to play with this train set!
If I'm reading this correctly the files can be added twice- once in INF for a static object and once in VEHICLES for a moving train.
Already added the train to the mole in a Layout and it sits well on the reduced rails. KDriver has removed the sleepers with the alpha channel.
Hi Ravenna,
If You want to have a "moving mole train" and a "static mole train" you will have to CUT and PASTE "mole train" from the "inf folder to the veh folder.
Then you will have to change the DP files to these values.
[MISC_DATA]
unit_family=3
category=21
You can't have two object BGL's with the same GUID number.
Maybe I should have done it this way.
Hope this helps,
B24Guy
Hi All,
I was just thinking. Can you use a veh as a static object and place it in the GSL?
Regards,
B24Guy
Yes you can.
"Let Being Helpful Be More Important Than Being Right!" Some SOH Founder.
OK, then I'll take the train objects out of INF and put them in VEH. Thanks guys!
Static train (apologies for the blurry graphics). Smoke fx looks good. Thanks B24Guy!
Not part of the GSL...this is part of a Layout.
Hi Ravenna,
I encountered a problem when placing the Loco as INF when it is a VEH. One loses the smoke FX.
The only solution I could come up with is to make a new BGL of the loco and place it in the INF folder.
This way one may have a Smoking non-moving Loco on the Mole.
I will send you the static Loco.

B24Guy
Got it. Thanks B24Guy!! Just experimenting with all the changed locomotives and rolling stock. I placed the static train as part of a Layout and placed a moving train on the mole in a mission using the "convoy" technique from Cody's MB handbook.
Tricky watching the movement while low flying.
Ravenna,
New FX for the Loco is on it's way.

Hi All
When I was very young my family lived about 2x the distance in the photo from the Enfield rail marshaling yards in Sydney.
My Mum often complained about soot on the washing and the curtains.
I enjoyed it as Dad would take us down to see the steam engines at work.
We were always welcomed in the roundhouses.
Memories!
Cheers
Stuart
Stuart, You have jogged my memory. When I was about 6 my grandfather and Dad took me to the Eveleigh workshops near Redfern in Sydney. At the time my Dad worked there as a coach painter and my Grandfather had worked there since he migrated from Scotland in 1912. I remember being hoisted up into the cab of a big locomotive and looking into the cold black fire box. I still get a kick out of seeing a (rare) steam train chuffing along our line.
Cheers,
Ravenna
Copied the fx to Wolfi's original locomotive. Love the smoke ( thanks B24Guy!) but wonder about its height. Have I placed it too far above the funnel?
I've spent hours lining up the formation and tweaking the waypoints. As you can see the damn loco keeps its distance from the box car. The train starts out connected and the waypoints are close together at curves in the track. Any ideas on how to keep a train in tight formation?
Hi Revenna,
Try a hand edit and copy all the waypoints, except the first one and last one, from the Loco and paste them to the cars, overwriting the cars original waypoints.
Might help,
B24Guy
