    Sim Outhouse not secure?

For many months now I've noticed that my browser (Google Chrome) warns that the SOH site is "Not Secure". I've noticed a post here in the forums of AVSIM having the same issues a while back due to an out-of-date security certificate.

Does the SOH certificate need updating? I realise this might seem trivial but it's rather disconcerting to see the message especially in these days of hacking and scams etc.

    Cheers,

I have never seen the "secure site lock" up in the search bar. This is what Firefox shows:

I can confirm this message appears in Firefox, but this is not the only forum site that I visit that is not secure.

"Brave" also shows it as "not secure."

SOH is still http:// and not https:// which is why you see the warning.

    Cheers,

    Yep!

Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) is the secure version of HTTP, the protocol over which data is sent between your browser and the website that you are connected to. The 'S' at the end of HTTPS stands for 'Secure'. It means all communications between your browser and the website are encrypted.

I just had a thought and checked on this. All contributions to the SOH are done through a secure site.

I have been entering "https://" manually for many months now. Fact of life for me.

Donations are not made on this site, but through secured ones (like PayPal). No worries here.

Just curious but is there any outcome concerning the insecure status of SOH? I do note that not all pages from SOH display the insecure status. I use Opera and utilize it's VPN as a precaution in addition to adding "https:// before I sign in.

However when entering the https:// protocol in the URL manually and the page reloads and shows no insecure status message does that mean it's secure or not?

    Thanks all

    P14u2nv,

We've tried compliments, love, and assurances, but it doesn't seem to work. I think the next step might be anti-depressants.

I will give an update later right now I am travelling and will not be home or stationary enough to go into that kind of detail.

Just remember even if you are accessing a secure site never duplicate passwords and user accounts. That is where the real problem is.

I'm seeing (noticing) "not secure" for the first time, is SOH a safe place to visit?
Any Moderators around who can answer that?

I just faced the same problem with our local village website. Some of our local residents were concerned about the message "not secure". While there's no real need for us to fix it (we don't collect any financial details or anything like that) we thought we should fix it to improve confidence in the site. It turned out to be really easy - our hosting provider included an SSL license in our hosting package (we'd never bothered to look before) and a simple plug-in for the site meant we had that nice padlock up and running in very little time. I'm guessing it may be a bigger problem here because of the complexity of the site with downloads, posts and forums but, for us, implementation was really straightforward (and I'm not much of a techie...)

Thanks Wombat, having read the whole thread before, I know why we are seeing this, my question was is SOH a safe place to visit? Can we download stuff without picking up something nasty?

if a site is http and not https, it isn't necessarily not secure. It's just a difference in protocol that is used to communicate.

Real security lies in the way the webserver is configurated. The fact that SOH doesn't suffer much from attacks or hacks is a good indication of the fact that it is indeed secure.

Oh, and blindly trusting warnings in any given browser is like trusting politicians. We shouldn't!
