Nigel's AVRO series continues... here's a little peek...

Now, at first glance this photo is decidedly ODD. What a curious place to park an AVRO 621...



...but, poking to look OVER the jetty it suddenly starts making sense. Instead of a 621, this happens to be the next in series (GLORIOUS SERIES), a 646 Sea Tutor!







Just when you thought this was a very good year, with Nigel's current offerings, this one "popped up". There are a few different variants to explore, and some water handling/control surface sailing skills to brush up on, but soon, very soon, I hope to tell you how this grand old lady FLIES!

This evening, I decided to spend a little time with K.6115 as that is the wheeled airframe I am most familiar with. Again, as ever, I turn to Orbx to create my world, and enough of it to enable my (willing) suspension of disbelief.

As is my norm in the RW when it comes to float planes, most of my time this evening was spent working out the power and control combinations necessary to achieve psuedo-control over the aeroplane on the water. In the air she's still a Tutor, albeit with a very different flight feel. The weight and drag of the floats are most apparent. Power settings needed revision to overcome the drag of two floats, and the all pervasive roll stability and longitudinal tracking tendency of a float plane are most apparent. Pull power on short final and she sinks as though she had very draggy weights suspended below her... hmmmm, I believe she DOES- wonder of wonders! There is no doubt you are flying something different- quite wonderful- but very different.

On water, be prepared to work yourself into a froth while you sniff the prevailing winds, hold appropriate aileron and pump throttle to move the nose. That done, a bit of rudder/water rudder actually flapping will work towards slowing you down. Here is where I decided to work my approach technique- you can see we are motoring into the wind, approaching the corner of the dock where the water is least crowded...



Then it's a matter of TINY bits of throttle and rudder flap to move the nose just so and ease up just so. That way there's enough of the float to step out on, and still reach the dock without a terribly adventurous long-jump.



Equally importantly, we are far enough from the De Haviland so as to not purchase parts AND there is enough of the wing across the dock, where an obliging soul can grab it and pull us closer in, AND keep us from drifting off.



As though the superlative offerings of wheeled Avro's weren't enough- you will soon have float versions to explore the world in!

This is good news! I'm curious about the handling on water with the rudderless pontoons. Those screenshots are nicely done, by the way.

There are water rudders, but they are aerodynamically shaped so as to disturb the airflow as little as possible. They do not move up and down/retract, so their effectiveness is adequate, no more.

Fortunately the controls do allow for a bit of “sailing the ship” but I always remind myself to approach objects only as fast as I plan to hit them

In what kind of waters did you do the testing here ?.. Alaska maybe ?.. I have a feeling it looks familiar to me but i'm not sure. It looks marvelous anyway !

This is a FSX native port, so perhaps there already are files for FS2004 or FS9 at least? Obviously, some of the texturing and lighting are unavailable in the older sims.

Thanks Carl ! Looks like i totally forgat about the Orbx freeware... I remember a harbor flying period ( i believe in honor of the Otter which i had been waiting for for so long, finally even started my own Max Otter model , but low and behold, even before finishing up the external here comes JF and, another low and behold on top, a bit later Milviz as well... not the first time this happens so i didn't need to throw my rig out the window.. ;-) but in Alaska. Lots of great seaplane basis here was well.

So, Canada this time (if i can find some..;-) thanks again for showing me the way!

Hmmm...tried the files in FSX but this renders the compass unadjustable, mpni.
The original version works perfectly in FSX, so not sure what could be happening in P3D V4.

I make a test on FSX whit the original version.
Have a look on the video in the AVRO 646 with FSX.
I make a left turn.
So the heading must decrease.
But it is not and compass heading increase.
When the aircraft is heading 270°, compas is at 090°.
