Wow I expect that 3 printing in many cases will replace casting in the future. But the level of detailing on the 3D model of the BMW engine is absolutely incredible. (But a bit too detailed for a flightsim )

actually, the level of detail is just because of the polygonal mesh auto smooth / subdivide / subpatch. thats the magic. you can see the TuFuns images presents a lot simpler mesh wire.

for the 3d print is such objet just transcoded into the smoothest polygonal (triangular) stage. and the final real print result depends then on the 3d printer technology.

relating to games there still is a rule to keep the 3d source and textures optimalised, so the true art isnt to build any highpoly surface, but to look it like so. I mean no wasting polygons

3d printing is already established in Railway modelling, for regular and fine detail assemblies - eg boiler backheads etc, so - welcome to the future.
