What is the better "Image" program for Windows 10...?

    Hello Chaps,

I have just upgraded to Windows 10 and have found that when I do a screen shot in P3Dv4 and then save as a background, the image is just horrendous!?!? The JPG seems fine in the default image program but when I save it as a "background image it becomes unsharp... and just plain awful.

Windows 7 use to use "Windows Photo Viewer" but that is no longer available for Windows 10!?!?

I have tried a couple of "apps" for Windows 10 from the Windows online shop but all seem to be just as as bad as each other. Would anyone have any recommendations for a better program to use please?

    Cheers,
    Tim.

There are easy ways to restore Windows Photo Viewer on W10. Got a .reg entry that solves the problem but my system is Portuguese, not sure if it will work, and a .exe to the sam effect. Just google restore viewer or similar. Easy to find. Then just do "open with" and it's ok. About image quality, never had a problem….

If you take a screen shot and it looks awful as a background the most likely reason is a difference in resolution from what your desktop uses compared to what you use in p3d, try setting p3d to use the same resolution and see if it looks better.

I still use the good old ctrl-printscreen and paste it into paint to crop it. Works as good as ever, regardless of the application that is running.

I use this little program to take screenshots (works for all programs) and ACDsee for organising, editing and viewing screenshots, and use it to make backgrounds as well. never a problem. Of course, the screenshot has the resolution of your screen, so if you want only part of your screenshot as a background, the image will become a bit blurry.
You can find most of my repaints for FSX/P3D in the library here on the outhouse.
For MFS paints go to flightsim.to

I will look into that. Thank you.

    blanston12:
Thank you for your input. The thing is the P3Dv4 shot looks fantastic!! Its when it is used as a "background" or "Screen Saver" that's when it loses its clarity!?!

    rodger-wilco-66:
Thank you for your input but to me that sounds like another step in what use to work straight away in Windows 7..!? No paint needed unless I was to post a picture somewhere that requires said picture to be a max of 1280x720.

    jankees:
Thank you i will give it a go.

Thank you all gentlemen for your inputs. Certainly something that requires more looking into. Why does Microsoft go and brake something that worked perfectly before!?!? But that is another topic!

    Cheers,
    Tim.

    Timmy,

I also have win10 and paint / pbrush (mspaint.exe) is still part of it, at least in my version (professional). If you do a ctrl-prtscreen you need an app to ctrl-v it into, because the screendump is initially transferred just into the windows clipboard. Which app you use actually does not matter, Paint, ACDsee, Irfanview, whatever. Just something where you can paste the dump into.

I use Photogallery to look at images. Just regular "Paint" is what I use to paste screenshots, and edit images as well. The Paint 3D, in my opinion, is a POS. NC

I've used FRAPS for longer than I care to think.
The recording function is good as well, it's only (minor) drawback is the video files are uncompressed and huge.
Easy enough to run through a conversion program.
My graphic programs are more aligned to photography, but ACDSee Photo Studio Ultimate 2018 is my general purpose choice.
I should add that running at 4K resolution gives one a nice crisp image to work with.

For taking screenshots I have always used the built in functionally of the sim which by default an be accessed by pressing the 'V' key, which causes the sim to save a jpg file into a folder that matches the program name, that is in your 'Pictures' folder. Then you just need to find an editing program you can use to crop and resize the images. Currently I use Photoshop Elements that I got on sale a few years back, but you could use the built in paint program, or if you want something free that is more powerful go find 'Gimp' which is very powerful, but sometimes hard to use.

Avoid the windows store like the plague for anything other than first-party microsoft games (like Forza Motorsports etc.)

FRAPS, even in it`s free version will let you take uncompressed screenshots.
