    Airco DH 9

    That nice Mr Ravenna of this parish asked me to build this WWI bomber and this is the results of my and UncleTgt's effort. This aircraft was a real turkey being rushed into production with an unreliable engine with practically no testing. It proved to be inferior to the DH 4 it was replacing. The RFC and then RAF soldiered on with it until something better ( the DH 9A ) came along.

    You'll find this model in the library now

    Airco DH 9.zip

    A new entry has been added to Add-Ons Library, category CFS 2 Aircraft - World War I

    Description: Single engined bomber of the RFC and then RAF. Designed to replace the Airco DH 4 and entered service late 1917 and on ops from March 1918.

    However, since its AS Puma engine was notoriously unreliable it proved to be inferior to the DH 4, but since it was in full production before flight testing revealed its shortcomings the RFC / RAF were stuck with it.

    Only when the a/c was redesigned around the American Liberty engine and became the DH 9A was it worth having.

    Turkeys have sharp beaks

    Thanks so much for all the work you both put into this project. The DH.9 was certainly under-powered but she was structurally strong and could take a bit of punishment, both at the hands of the enemy and from novice pilots. Several MCs and at least one VC were won by determined crews and a few rail junctions were accurately bombed by formations of this aircraft. She was built in numbers and widely deployed, and while not the most popular mount made a difference to the bombing offensive of 1917-1918.

    Check out the great job on the wiring. Could biplanes be addictive?

    Mike, now you can take that well deserved break!

    Now I can also have a good look at Uncle's atmospheric art work.

    Off to download.

    Turkeys with sharp beaks

    Hi Mike

    your comments are well put, I think the results were the triumph of determined crews who struggled with the poor equipment at their disposal and suffered many casualties. It was ever thus and still is.

    Thank you all for your kind words - hats no longer fit

    DH 9 panel

    I have revised the panel so that the aiming point avoids as much of the front end junk as possible and have uploaded to CFS 2 panels in the library

    also a simple alteration in the aircraft.cfg will have you looking thru' the scope when in vc panel view

    [Views]
    //eyepoint=-3.8,0.0,2.6
    eyepoint=-3.8,0.6,2.5

    these alterations were suggested by Ravenna

    the panel folder includes the original stuff so you can choose which you prefer

    Lovely paint UncleTgt. Just stay away from Holland, which is where this aircraft ended up. By the way, in researching this particular aircraft I found that the 2 at the front the squadron number denoted that, prior to the creation of the RAF, it had been a RNAS squadron.

    Baldy,

    I hope you don't mind, but I included the panel update with the original package (in a separate folder) to make installation easier.
