    Black&White.

Way back when I dabbled in 'RL Racing' I had plenty of opportunities to get into areas that the general public could not.
I always shot B&W because I could process it myself and it was cheap to buy film in bulk.
These are rather old and not that good but I thought I might as well inflict them on an unsuspecting audience!
FWIW the negs have been stored in an old cardboard container and are a bit scruffy............ actually very scruffy indeed!.

Rallycross was popular and the legendary 'Peter Perfect' (Peter Brock) came into prominence aboard this device, Holden's LC Torana XU1 severely modified and highly effective.

Those look good to me! thanks for posting.... I bought a 35mm when I was 18 and shot B/W for the same reasons. I used Kodak tri pan x.

B&W is about the elements, the subject, without he distraction of color. The image focuses on the forms. Nice photos. I especially like the one with the car airborne. That was good timing. You couldn't afford to rip off a ten shot burst back then. At least, I couldn't. I can still remember my wife getting on my case for shooting too many slides of something.

Like you two, I cut my teeth on B&W. I had a Minolta SR-T101 SLR.

I like number 3 too, cracking timing! Ever try turning your digital stuff to B&W these days?

I do it frequently. Everything I shoot is in color. I then convert to monotone. Here are some examples.

I have tried a few B&W conversions, but also some with still a bit of colour, like this one:

Intel i9-13900 Raptor Lake , Be Quiet! Dark rock slim cooler, 32 Gb Corsair DDR5 RAM, MSI Z790 Tomahawk motherboard, Asus RTX 4060Ti 16Gb, Thermaltake 1050 Watt PSU, Windows 11 64-bit 1 m2, 4 SSD, 2 HDD.

Not the best of my old shots but a significant one to me, the 'Master' at the 1978 Australian Grand Prix 50th Anniversary meeting.
Aside from running a few laps in this big old Benz tourer he showed a great turn of speed aboard a W196.............and I will find those negatives eventually!

I just found this old thread, and I love the racing shots. They represent very well what b/w film photos are about.
I myself went back to analog photography, about 70% b/w, and really like that you have to slow down and get engaged with light and composition again.

    Here's a few shots:

Outstanding sharpness and definition R-W, what are you using...........I'm quite interested in going B&W again.
Should REALLY do some serious looking around but it's something I need to fit into my crowded 'schedule'.

The camera is a Mamiya RZ67 ProII, film is 6x7 medium format, the photos here were made with the "to go" 110mm/f:2.8 lens. I usually use Ilfort Delta pro 100 film, and sometimes ADOX CMS20 (the first B-25 has been exposed with that). The ADOX is rated at ASA around 15, and immensely dynamic and sharp, but you need a tripod due to long exposure times.

The original images are between 80 and 100 megapixel, and beat every digital APSC for "full format" in my opinion. :-)

    Long live film!

    Cheers,
    Mark

Those are impressive shots, Mark. Film can handle dynamic range so much better than digital. It shows in your shots.

I once went to Death Valley, CA, USA with a gentleman named Michael Gordon. Michael shoots medium format B&W. He has published several coffee table books on Death Valley. He shoots almost exclusively in B&W.

Thanks for mentioning Micheal Gordon, John. Sounds interesting, expecially the Death Valley setting. I'll check on that!

After a 15 year long journey into digital photography I went back to analog, and appreciate it more than ever. There is something about letting your head getting deeply involved in what you're doing. The Mamiya camera is totally dumb, doesn't even have a light meter. You have to know your fixed focal length lenses, the depth of field for aperture settings, exposure corrections for extending the bellows (near focus).
Every different film throws a new parameter in that equation - with results that are specific for the film and are anticipated and planned ahead of the exposure. And it should be carefully planned, since you only have 10 exposures for each roll of film.

I really love that, the only thing that is better is large format photography, because you have a lot more freedom for optical manipulations due to the adjustable front standard and back plane. But here you're down to two exposures (at best) per film holder!

No comparison with your work Mark but this was shot in 1972 on an early model Canon using 'cheap' B&W.
The above mentioned Peter Brock now a full time GMH factory team driver winning another ATCC round at the wheel of an LJ202 Torana XU1, pretty much a race prepared version of my daily driver at the time.
For a car to qualify for the ATCC series the manufacturer had to build 1000 cars made available for sale through their dealer networks. In this case the LJ202 came off the showroom floor at just under A$3000.00 and would comfortably hit 130+ MPH!

That's a gripping capture! It compares in every way to anything I do. The focus and the exposure is spot on and you led the "target" perfectly - I know that images like that are not easy to to capture with analog cameras, especially older ones that require manual settings.

Interesting side info about the car - I guess that AUD 3000.00 were a lot more in these days than today :-)
