Repainting.... well ok, not in the FS sense!

well I've been away too long, decided to hop back in here! FS Repaints have slowed to a trickle due to no work coming in so having to reduce amount of time doing things for FS! (joys of being freelance graphic artist!).... but in saying that have had 2 major bits of luck! first there was the F-4E appearance at RIAT 2017 complimented by my tail and tank art (did design, not application!... design extended to 2 patches and their crew nameplates!) then in April a call went out to submit a design for RAF Cosford in preparation for their Airshow... didn't expect to get it.. but.....

at the end of the first little bit.... masking up the area!

after laying in the white and with a reference taped up the teeth got masked off....

meanwhile my fantastic assistant got stuck in on the noseart!

at the end of the day we had the mouth in place! next job.... the eyes! (a week or two later!)

starting on the eyes! decided the best and fastest way was to hand paint them! so out came the hairy sticks! (and for those who noticed the 'mop chop' no that is NOT where the hair for the brushes came from!)

a short while later the eyes really started to take shape!

overall and pre-airshow, had just finished the opposite side eye.... time to pack up and p*ss off! (at least until the airshow!)...

.... and there she was! basking in the Cosford sun! alongside her Desert sisters! representing GW1.....

even made it into the Official Programme! (though i wish my assistant was mentioned too!.. oh and spot the typo!)

...and of course... my assistant and I... now known as 'Team Tornado' with our baby behind! (Trust me, you do NOT want to see that shirt I wear as Tradition for all airshows I attend in colour!) needless to say... yes... I felt proud, not for myself... oh no... definitely proud of my assistant! she kept me going right from the design phase, through to preparation and application! without her it would not have come to fruition!

    Well done Matt!
Expect banging, belching and an occasional manly fart as you roar down the runway at full power. (I have found that the engine can make similar noises)

    cheers guys!

absolutely Dave! nothing better than a nice sharkmouth! was a bit of fun having to improvise from GR.1 onto the GR.4 (due to the lack of a port side Mauser BK-27 (27mm cannon)) but I think I improvised that pretty well!.... masking was an art form.... the day we did the mouth it was warm and we all know how reluctant masking tape can be to stick anyway even on the best of days!...

thanks Dimus! bit of a change from the tail and tank design I did last year for 338 squadron - Polemikh Aeroporia and one of their F-4E's ready for RIAT (Along with crew nameplates, Stickers & 2 unique patches)! the RAF made me get my proper brushes out for Tornado, not just a digital one! now... back to doing this design work for 337M

My personal opinion: I would like to see a HAF design that is less flashy and somehow less "folk" if you know what I mean. A well applied sharkmouth like this one you did on the Tornado is classy, fun and powerful at the same time.

Looking forward to seeing your design for 337.

oh the thing for 337 is patch design as usual... though i do have a Viper scheme which features on the wall there as we know can't do anything without Chief of Staff approval haha! if they say flashy well... we just have to be good boys (and girls) and do as we are told (within reason) haha!

things aren't fun for us artists I can tell ya! short of buying an industrial compressor, hangar, fitting it for spraying, fitting out an office etc... things are very tough currently

Yo Matt - Congrats to "Team Tornado"! Good hearing from you buddy. Not very often one gets to splash some paint on the real deal. All the best...
