    Scenery Glitch

I have just come across a phenomenon which I haven't seen for years. Whenever I choose RAAF Darwin in Free Flight the chosen aircraft appears huge and sits on a plane (level) above the runway. This happened to me in a WW1 install years ago, but I can't remember what the remedy was. This only happens in the one location and it happens regardless of the aircraft chosen. One other element to muddy the waters: the same MR airfield in a different install behaved perfectly.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Michael,

Rhumba's mesh, water files and coastal flatten layers will all work OK with MR's Australian airfields but not his later water masks. From bottom layer to top they should be in the following order: Mesh LOD7, Mesh LOD8, Water, Coast.
I made Parap civil airfield and Doctors Gully flying boat base to compliment MR's RAAF airfield and they should be placed in the same scenery folder.
    I hope this helps.

Thanks Kevin. I have my scenery folders in that order but the folder with the scenery for Darwin Civil etc is a distinct entry, one down from MR's Australia airfields. Darwin Civil appears as it should and all MR's other Australian airfields are good (well...the other NT and Queensland fields; I haven't looked at WA fields). I will try uninstalling MR's Australia and placing the files in the scenery folder with Darwin Civil.

No worries. About to have another look at this.

It is very rare, but I have encountered scenery bgl files that have contained exact same object ID numbers. Two bgl files with same object ID messes up the scenery. This may or may not be causing your scenery issue.

To change the object ID number you would probably need BGLAnalyze to disassemble the bgl to scasm, edit the object ID number, and compile to bgl with scasm assembly program.

I do not currently have the links to these freeware application programs though.

Sample bgl decompiled to scasm below (just a few lines and the ObjID number location):

    ; ----------------------------------------
    ; Library section
    ; ----------------------------------------

    ; ----------------------------------------
    ; Library Object #1, Offset 0x0018, size 1512 (= 0x920178)
    ; ----------------------------------------
    ObjID( 12FF5577 FFFFFFFF 00000001 00000000 )

    Thanks Ogilvie,
I did think of conflicting names but I didn't find any. Knowing how careful Kevin is it couldn't be in his Darwin scenery, but it does look like a conflict. All my library entries are in the correct order but in any case this doesn't look like incorrectly placed layers. This is what I'm getting.........a bit like the aeronautical equivalent of a Darwin stubbie!

One other thing of some note (maybe): after uninstalling and reinstalling library entries the sim hasn't generated any filelists.

    Question Reply...

    Michael,

I think I remember happening to me. Did you check and see if you removed the original Darwin field from MaskRider's Australia package? The new GSL airfield and the older one are slightly different in height...

Off to do a thorough search for an old Darwin bgl.

    Thanks Andrew.

    Ravenna,

In fact, looking at it again I can tell, because there are two hangars in that picture. I talked to Chris (MaskRider) when I was building the Darwin airfield's GSL layout, and basically used the same technique that he used when converting his non-GSL airfields to GSL; playing the new objects on the old ones by keeping both airfield .bgls loaded in the scenery so I had a "template," and then removing the old field once the new layout was completed.

Sometimes, Chris said he changed the size of the library objects in the original non-GSL versions, which is why you have the discrepancy in size that you see in that picture.

    Hi Ravenna
You may need to explain what a Darwin Stubby is.
    Cheers

For most Australians a stubbie is a small bottle of beer. They used to do thing "outsized" in the Northern Territory, so a Darwin Stubbie was a very large bottle of beer. Production of these has been discontinued, so I guess Territorians now prefer to brew their own!

Finally resolved my scenery problem, but the solution raises more questions than it answers. Not being able to find a conflict among my scenery files I tried removing the Darwin RAAF bgl from Maskrider Australia entry. When I went back into the sim the menu still allowed selection of RAAF Darwin and all looked normal. Now I am wondering what file generates this scenery. I deleted the filelist and I can't find any other Darwin RAAF entries (as I said), so I am mystified.

    Ravenna.

Perhaps your computer had a Darwin stubbie. In truth, it sounded like a filelist.dat got corrupted. Glad you got it sorted.
