Very interesting Bob. Talk about "Use the force"!:d
20/20, good depth perception, great reflexes and a box full of tracer ammo is all you really need!

So what did he use to line up his target? A dot painted on his windscreen? An old ring site screwed on outside of the cockpit? He'd need something.

He was good enough that he didn`t need anything. The 1st thing you do is you have to get in close and then pull lead on the target. You then fire and adj. your lead by watching your tracers untill you hit the target. In fact Maj. Foss only used 4 guns at anyone time.:d

He was fighting early Zero's, Betty's and Vals mainly....all like Zippo lighters that didn't take much to light up. Two guns would have been enough...that's all the Zero aces were using.
They'd generally come into a fight using the smaller caliber nose-mounted guns for initial firing solutions, i.e. ranging, targeting, etc., then switch to the two wing-mounted cannons for the finish. They didn't carry a lot of cannon ammo, so the two nose guns did most of the work.

Bearcat241 is on the money. It took the F4F when it hit its target aircraft about 18sec. to down an early enemy plane. It took the enemy about 15min to do the samething.:d
