    Watery Issues Around Moresby

    Hi All,

I have attached a screen shot of the waterfront at 3 Mile Kila near Port Moresby. As you can see the water is anything but flat. This install was set up as per the instructions in Rami's PTO installation guide. I have tried changing the location of the watermask files several times but each trial gives some "wavy water" issue/s. The shot here uses the watermasks as a seperate scenery library folder added just above Terrain.

Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

Checking out the coastal issue I was also struck by the lack of beaches around New Guinea. Is this to be expected? Is it a consequence of the improved mesh?

    Cheers,

    Michael

    Michael,

Aha! You've found a BIG problem that I only obliquely mentioned. There IS a line about this campaign readme (in pack II) about running off the stock coastlines, except I also say to use Dvslats modified guide as well. Yeah....that doesn't really work well, does it?

Your only mistake was following the directions...how ironic.

So basically, use Rhumba's old coastlines (which are included) and his flattens, (also included) but NOT the new watermasks, the stock watermasks are best. Using those will also restore coastlines in the area and fix that water table.

Yikes...that's a jumble. I will fix that mess this weekend.

You didn't do anything wrong, it's because Rhumbas new world mesh is more accurate than the original PTO mesh that CFS 2 shipped with.

So, unless somebody redraws PNG to match the new mesh, this will be an issue (throughout the PTO).

His new watermasks are IMHO too aggressive, with water slopes where there shouldn't be water at all. I usually don't bother to use them.

Thanks for the very useful responses guys. Apart from actually flying in the CFS2 world, the big attraction is problem solving. Of course keeping the problems to a minimum helps to ward off being totally swamped, so I never do anything that can't be undone. I will remove the watermasks and have a look. Still, it would be good to have sandy beaches around some NG coastlines. Ela beach was a much used surfing beach in Port Moresby and was popular with all the service personnel stationed in Moresby. Redrawing the New Guinea coastline?..........we seem to need a Pacific sands Sanders.

OK, this has been my Sunday entertainment: Disabled Rhumba's watermasks, checked to make sure the flatten line in terrain was correct, installed Pacific Coast North Asia coast and PTO Flattens and added them to the scenery library. Exited, then booted the sim and went to the scenery library where I moved these folders to just above Terrain. At this stage I still have the DEM7 and DEM8 folders installed and located just above the coasts and PTO Flattens. In the same area as my previous screen shot, this is what I am seeing......

    Michael,

Can you post your scenery.cfg file?

    Hi Michael,

Try this one for size - just change the extension to cfg.

I deactivated one of the Pacific coast flatten layers- I think you can have only one or the other active at the same time. The mesh layers needed reversing. A few other layers needed rearranging as well.

    Thanks Kevin,

Over the weekend I tried several layer arrangements and combinations of files. As Uncle TGT says, the watermasks are too agressive, but they do give what looks like an accurate coastline, even if the water looks like industrial strength jelly and there are no beaches. I will try your cfg today and let you know how I go.

With the new scenery.cfg: Same place, same look. Looks like NG is going through a Cubist phase.

    Question Reply...

    Ravenna,

Sniff, sniff....there's something rotten in Denmark. Are you using the stock watermasks?

Try putting the stock coastline/watermask bgls (that you removed when installing Rhumbas watermasks) back in?

Yes, it looks like the stock files which are supposed to be removed when installing Rhumba's watermasks have not been reinstated.

Rhumba's watermasks are required for the Sakishima-Gunto scenery (as well as other newer scenery packages by Maskrider) to show correctly. I suggest reinstalling them as layer 002, activating it only when flying around Sakishima-Gunto. Rhumba's CFS2 Coast Pacific and CFS2 NAsia_China Water layers have to be deactivated at the same time.

I've placed those stock coastal files, which are supposed to be removed, in my Rhumba CFS2 Coast Pacific layer. This avoids having to manually remove them every time Rhumba's watermasks are activated.

I've never got around to comparing Ettico's PTO coastal flattens with those by Rhumba. Does anyone have a preference?

What a dope! Forgot about that step. Thanks Kevin, Uncle and Andrew. That looks like a very good strategy Kevin.
