    RTWR 2018 Practice 4

Using the same rules for P1 P2, and P3 proceed from FACT to SCGZ with 1 stop above N70.

For this practice we will allow each pilot 1 wildcard leg of not more than 1,000 nm (3 hr time limit).

Pilot requirements. After you advance the baton on your first leg your next leg must be in one of the MS/Lockheed Default aircraft. There is no time or distance limit on this flight. This is a one time requirement although feel free to fly a default any time you choose.

SOMEthing weird happened. I crashed on take-off. Turning onto course, suddenly airspeed dropped to 0, stalled, too low to recover. It wasn't pitot heat problem, because that's just an indication problem. Plenty warm enough to prevent carb ice. NO idea what happened.
Batan is still free at FAAB.

    I'll try again asap...

    EDIT:
I just tried it again to see if I could duplicate whatever happened. No trouble on take off at all. Turned onto course fine, climbed fine, good airspeed the whole way. NO idea what the heck happened.
On a brighter note, I DID get the Post/take-off order correct this time.
Oh well, I'll try again another time...

Were you doing a hard bank and yank? Tom did an excellent job on the air file. If you bank it too hard and pull back too hard on the rudder you will fall out of the sky. Unless you have at least 5000' of altitude. Then you might be able to recover.

With the F7F, on take off, I always use one notch of flaps, and around 3-4 degrees nose-up trim. Just let her fly off which doesn't take much runway.

Well, this practice has a bit of route choice then...

    http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=FACT-EN...&SG=400&SU=kts

Greenland looks to be shortest, and getting there via UK and Iceland is easy enough, but then there's a lot of sea to cross. I wonder what the range of the Default MS B747-400 is...

    Some thoughts.
Well, if you kick all the passengers off and load 'er chock full of fuel, she'll go a very long way indeed! I was thinking the B744 from Greenland to either CYHZ, TXKF, or LPLA depending on the winds, or heck, even to SOCA to take VERY advantage of the terms. (Yes, I know it's bad grammar - just trying to use it as humor.)
I thind rat-holing a default B744 flight from Greenland would be a good move. A lot of open ocean, that's where we should use it.

It can go at least 5 miles after it runs out of fuel. A few years ago in a Race leg Fliger747 loaded the fuel to the aircraft as he would in the real thing. Opps bad idea he ran out on final the tanks are not configured the same as in the aircraft he flew. Luckily he saw it coming and had extra altitude on his side. He landed empty with only the pucker factor to show for it.

AHA! You hit the nail right on the head. I will have to remember that, and be a lot more gentle with the Cat. Thanks.

Mr. Shupe, That's exactly how I take off, but as Dave said, I tried to yank-n-bank onto course, while climbing out, once I got her cleaned up, and she bit me in the seat of the pants for it
I deserved what I got. She had her own quirks, like any plane does. I still love this plane!

Well, that leaves me out. I seem to have a mental block when it comes to flying tubes. Of any sort. No matter HOW many T&G's I try to do, I just can not seem to land one worth a darn. I try to do T&G's, I wind up with an approach, and a very nice crash. EVERY time...
Secondarily, I just can't stay up long enough for the Greenland-SCGZ leg. Medical problems prohibit.
Other than all that, I'd be happy to take any leg I am physically capable of.
Gimme a Beech 350, or a Race P-51, default planes, and I'll be fine. Put me in a Boeing 7Anything, and forget it.

I hear ya, Pat. I'm the same way with choppers. I just can't seem to get a handle on those machines. I remember that someone once compared hovering to trying to stand up on a floating inner tube, and i agree. I'll keep away from the rotorcraft and stick to being a "potato" (which is classified as a "tuber")!
    Fair skies and following winds,

    Frank
