Thread: RTWR 2018 Practice 4

  1. #26
I remember that someone once compared hovering to trying to stand up on a floating inner tube, ...
Actually it's more akin to balancing a basketball on top of a broom handle, while standing on a beach-ball, that is balanced atop a medicine-ball.
But I do like the water thing. I'll have to think on how to integrate that..

I can fly choppers in FSX pretty well. Add in HTR, or Helicopter Total Realism, a little program that REALLY improves the realism for choppers in FSx, and they are a challenge, but awfully fun, for me. I have a number of favorites, including a Bell 206, a Killer Egg, as other pilots call them, or MD 500, a Bell Cobra, and now Maryadi's MV-22, which is a sort of a helicopter/airplane cross breed. Fantastic aircraft, it really is.
It's been a while, so I'd need a little practice time to get re-proficient, like for last year's race, but it wouldn't take me long, if we need choppers flown for this year's race. It's possible!
Same for the Section8 F-86. I'd need some touch-n-goes to get proficient in it again.
I hope we get notified about things like that, but you know how "they" are...

I'll try to run a leg tomorrow morning. I hope can get one in. Real life keeps knocking me around...

    Have fun, gang!

The baton is free at FYOA. Duenna to follow.

Haven't flown this bird for a while, but it worked out very nicely.
    Have fun all!

(Yes, I know it's bad grammar - just trying to use it as humor.)
I thind rat-holing a default B744 flight from Greenland would be a good move. A lot of open ocean, that's where we should use it.
For those who might contemplate that long overnight express run...
"For this practice we will allow each pilot 1 wildcard leg of not more than 1,000 nm (3 hr time limit)." Dave's rules, not mine - if up to me I'd have said 1500nm in 4-engine piston aircraft, but then I like long flights in the B-50

So the question is, which rule do we read?

For this practice we will allow each pilot 1 wildcard leg of not more than 1,000 nm (3 hr time limit).
After you advance the baton on your first leg your next leg must be in one of the MS/Lockheed Default aircraft. There is no time or distance limit on this flight. This is a one time requirement although feel free to fly a default any time you choose.
(Text highlighted by me for emphasis)

The way I was reading these rules, the second takes precedence over the first. Shedding some light on this would help clarify how we should plan the route.

I've been running some permutations based on the second rule, and there are several possibilities. One would be a short field min-fuel takeoff with the default B744 out of BGCO and land CYHZ and then continue TXKF-TJSJ/TISX using wildcard legs, and then stitch a route through South America. If anyone is amenable to a default B744 flight based on the second rule, that opens up a lot of possibilities.
    Fair skies and following winds,

    Frank

Well it was a tough climb out. I lost my sense of direction and barely missed losing control. I am about 14 minutes and heading down shortly.

Nice! Lite winds on the approach. Little bumpy, but controllable. Decent visibility.
Only bounced 3 times! That should make my ground crew happy!

Now off to the Club for some refreshments
Thanks for flying Wing for me, Spookster
    Have fun Gang!
