Just for reference ZMUG is a 6400 ft grass strip, a better option might be ZMKD which is a 9300 ft asphalt runway.

You're right. I made a mistake of not looking what the runway WAS in MSFS, vs what it IS in the real word. Real world, it's an almost 9000' paved runway, but in the sim, 6400 grass. Which it WAS when the sim was published. It was upgraded in 2009.
Another mistake on my part. Sure glad this is practice.
Having said that, most of the WWII fighters on the Whitelist were perfectly capable of utilizing grass, or gravel, or PSP, whatever, barely improved runways. Look at some of the strips the Marines were using in the Pacific campaign. Bulldoze a strip, lay down PSP, pray for a lack of rain
From what I understand, the strip throughout Europe were the same. Grass or gravel, PSP, something like that. Heck, the British Spitfire aerodromes were almost entirely grass. Not all, but certainly many.
It seems to me that the correct choice of plane, like a P38, P47, F7F, and so on, would permit the use of a grass strip. Maybe that's a bit short, but it would be an acceptable surface. I will certainly admit, a 9000+' paved is definately a better choice, no question. But come down to it, I bet a grass strip is perfectly workable to most of the Whitelist aircraft.
I KNOW! I was setting up an extra-tough landing, in case the Race committee threw a curve-ball at us. Yeah, that was it!

No problem Pat, you are correct that most warbirds can land on grass strips (or anything else for that matter) but during the race it's a safer option to pick a longer, hard surface, runway if there is one available without too much deviation. This is especially true at night as there are very few lit grass strips out there!

Although the ones lit with with fires, like Tiki Torches, or burning buckets of sand with diesel fuel in them, stuff like that, can be SO romantic. Once you get landed safely, of course. If you've got a female copilot, well, let's just say good times

We've actually done that during a race, had a bunch of us sitting either side of the runway with lights on so the race pilot could see where the runway was. Pilot can see all the player markers lining the runway and just needs to aim for them, runway will find him eventually.

Edit: The weather during my descent was occasional IFR, and turbulent. I didn't want to take my attention away from flying the plane to make Posts. Sorry about that. During the real event, my lovely wife, MissGhost screen name, would be making posts for me under such circumstances. Teamwork

We did that my first year on the Flightsim team. The computer I had at the time wasn't the best, and it darn near had a nervous beak-downWe've actually done that during a race, had a bunch of us sitting either side of the runway with lights on so the race pilot could see where the runway was. But it worked long enough to get the baton down, at least. Pretty nifty idea, though.

Yep, one of my most exciting landings in the RTW race was at an unlighted strip in South America. At night. In a thunderstorm. I was flying dcc's P-38. There was zero (0.0) chance of finding that airport were it not for some of our team mates on the ground. 10,000 foot lighted runways are not always available. It's good practice to pick the hard ones, during practice...

As this is practice, things are a bit lax. However we have to also be practicing "good behaviour" and trying to be thorough.
As such, BEFORE launching on a flight, please make sure your Duenna is set to record in a 'safe' event. There is a SOH Practice event and other places we can use so please pick one of those, not one we'd like to keep "clean" like the 2017 RTW Race Official Tracking ().
