Spitfire Mk IXC BS273 (Merlin 61) Flg Off Prince Emanuel Galitzine, High Altitude Flight, Northolt, 12th September 1942.

Spitfire LF.Mk IXc (Merlin 66) MK915 X, converted to FR.Mk IXc, No.16 Squadron, Northolt, late June-September 1944.

Spitfire LF.Mk IXc (Merlin 66, 25lbs boost) NH270, converted to FR.Mk IXc, GR II/33 Savoie, Luxeuil, Winter 1944-45.

Spitfire Mk IXC BS273 is referred to by its serial BS273, but that the serial painted on the actual aircraft was BF273. This serial was actually allocated to a Blenheim, and must have been the result of a fitter getting muddled-up while repainting the aircraft.BS273 was used on 12th September 1942 by Flg Off Galitzine to intercept a Junkers Ju86R bomber of the Hohenkampfkommando over Southampton at 43,000 feet, which turned out to be the highest air-to-air engagement of the War. The aircraft had received substantial modifications including the deletion of the .303 machine-guns.

A small number of Mk IX airframes were converted to FR.Mk IX standard while the Mk X and XI were being developed. MK915 and NH270 are typical of these aircraft. Full armament was retained, in keeping with the aircraft's low-level 'dicing' job. The pink paint used on MK915 is equally typical of aircraft used for low-level photographic reconnaissance; as the best light conditions for spotting enemy positions were when the sun was low in the sky, throwing long shadows and silhouetting buildings and vehicles, this scheme was extremely effective.
