Icon22 British Gliders by Baldy released!

    Hi

Been off the air for a bit but have not been idle - about ten years ago I modelled some British gliders as well as the German DFS 230 - well I revisited the German a/c and now have turned my hand to the British ones.

With the help of UncleTgt I have made the GA Hotspur trainer glider and it will soon be ready for release - it is our intention to recreate the gliders used by British and American Airborne Forces during WWII. Also on the stocks is the aircraft used as a tug in the training program.

By using the Tow gauge it is possible to fly these gliders without bothering too much about air file parameters plus there are several aircraft in the library to act as tugs by means of an addition to the gliders dp file. Similarly the tug aircraft can haul a glider by an addition to the dp.

I would ask Rami to remove the Horsa and Hamilcar gliders from the library as they are not really up to the standard we want today.

In the meantime here are some pics of the Hotspur

    all the best

Good looking. When I think of Brit gliders all that comes to mind is the Horsa so would be good to have another.

    Baldy,

This is really looking really good! And yes, UncleTgt has a wonderful touch on repaints. I have a lot of them for BoF.

    Hotspur glider

    Hi

I have just uploaded the Hotspur glider as the first in the series of gliders used by The Glider Pilot Regiment of the British Army during WWII.

We are all familiar with the events of Normandy and Arnhem but gliders were used by the Allies in many theatres - Norway, Sicily,Southern France and the Balkans and that's just the European Theatre. US forces as well as using Horsas in Europe also used the Waco CG-4 in both Europe and the Far East

UncleTgt is at present working on the skins of several new aircraft which we will be uploading as and when they are ready

    Hotspur.zip

A new entry has been added to Add-Ons Library, category CFS 2 Aircraft - British

Description: Designed as an assault glider in response to German success with gliders in Belgium in 1940, the GA Hotspur was relegated to training duties when the larger Horsa design was preferred for attack purposes. Nevertheless the Hotspur was used in the training of all British glider pilots who became the Glider Pilot Regiment as part of the Army Air Corps in early 1942.

    More British Gliders

Following on from the Hotspur UncleTgt and I have now completed the Horsa Mki - and I have now uploaded it. So I am asking our eminent librarian if he would remove the old Horsa and Hamilcar packs from the library.

UncleTgt has outdone himself by producing four textures for this pack with more to come

included in the pack is a revised mission from the old pack depicting the Pegasus bridge mission but could be used for any glider assault

these are pics from one of my goes - the pillbox is the target - see how close you can get - check the flying instructions

my OCD compelled me to do the Hamilcar and the Waco Hadrian so these will be appearing in the near future.

    AS Horsa MkI.zip

A new entry has been added to Add-Ons Library, category CFS 2 Aircraft - British

Description: The Horsa glider carried up to thirty troops or a mix of troops and stores including a jeep. It was first used by British Airborne forces in November 1942 in Norway. That mission was a failure due to weather but set a precedent. Further missions took place in Sicily and elswhere in the Mediterranean TO.

British forces used mass parachute and glider landings on the Eastern end of the Normandy invasion beaches while the US forces did the same at the Western end. Horsa gliders were used alongside Waco CG-4A gliders by US forces as part of their assault.

British airborne went on to use the Horsa on major operations at Arnhem. Southern France and the Rhine Crossing.

    USAAF texture

must hold my hands up to a snafu - I made an alteration to two of Uncle's bmps in the USAAF texture for the Horsa and forgot to refresh the alpha channel - the attached zip has corrected files

    USAAF Files.zip

my apologies to all affected, especially UncleTgt for thinking I could improve his work -

Rami could you put these corrected files in the Horsa pack please?

    Lovely work, people.

    Now....a Hamilcar?

UncleTgt is manfully working his way thru the stuff I heaped on his plate so the Hamilcar may well appear soon - but you can't rush an artist

    Horsa MkII

Have just uploaded the Horsa MkII which saw action at the Rhine crossing - the hinged nose gave improved loading / unloading capability.

UncleTgt has also provided several skins which illustrate its varied career ranging from Europe, the Middle East to India

    AS Horsa MkII.zip

A new entry has been added to Add-Ons Library, category CFS 2 Aircraft - British

Description: A development of the original Horsa which gave increased load carrying capacity and easier loading/unloading. This was brought about by hinging the fuselage just behind the cockpit and equipping the a/c with a double nose-wheel for extra load bearing.

The Mk. II entered service in late 1944 and saw action with British airborne in Operation Varsity in March 1945. (The Rhine crossing)

It remained in service until after the war seeing service in Palestine and trials in India.

Just like to say thank you Baldy. Your always creating interesting toys for us and I know it takes a lot of time and energy to get them done. Your efforts a greatly appreciated by us here at the OH.
