    FSX P-61 Black Widow?

I've been a bit behind for the past few weeks due to aircraft composites classes, and I was wondering if anyone was working on an FSX-native Northrop P-61 Black Widow?

There is a project out there...just not sure when it will be finished...

Expect banging, belching and an occasional manly fart as you roar down the runway at full power. (I have found that the engine can make similar noises)

    Hi Paiken.

I've been putting the p-61 team back together. So ar, we have myself, Delta558, Tom Stovall, Roger-Wilco, and we're just waiting for Robert to check in. We're working on making the effects current and improving what parts of the flight model we can. Stay tuned. It's taking a little time, but we'll get there and get you the P-61..

Absolutely hope this comes to fruition this time round. I was astounded by the efforts and energy exerted last time by the team and was deeply saddened when it withered away.

Thanks for resurrecting Warchild. It is indeed a beautiful plane, even in it's alpha/beta stage.

Thanks Strykerpsg. I'll take all the encouragement we can get. I'm proud of what we accomplished and really need to see this finished.
In the meantime, there's Miltons Douglas A-20. I took that out for a couple hours of flying around Bouganville today and I was extremely impressed. It flies ( well, handles ) almost identically to the P-61, but it is a great deal slower because of the different engines. It's a great plane, and I couldnt recommend it more..

I just put up a new version of the aircrft.cfg file for my team to download, so, progress is happening. Its just that the flight model is near done, and we're waiting on the 3D..

    Always.

This is such a great shot! I had a Monogram 1/48 scale P-61 back in the late 70's, early 80's and I loved that beast! I still remember the zinc chromate green interior and imagined vividly that the rear gunner/RADAR operator was killing every plastic Zero attacking it. Thank goodness for computer simulation now and where it's advanced too. Definitely looking forward to what will come.

I've been working on a P-61B Black Widow for the past nine months or so, and recently stumbled across this thread. Looks like things are a bit like buses when it comes to the Widow! Not looking to hijack the thread, but thought folks might like to know that the ( much-ignored by flight-sim! ) P-61 is finally getting some attention from developers.

How far along are you guys so far? Your screenies look great and I recall seeing some videos once on YouTube showing a decent VC in place. My effort is about 50% complete, just building up the VC and tinkering with the external model. No "team" for me unfortunately as this is my first model but thought I'd throw a couple of shots up here for folks to see. Some way to go and I'm only just about to figure out the air file ( using a stock P3D stand-in for now ) but everything's coming together. The build is in FSDS 3.5.1, converting to P3D .mdl standard where necessary.

Go easy on me folks, I know by reputation many of the developers who frequent this site after many years' of browsing / lurking. I'll post more screenies as I complete further bits and bobs.

    External model, awaiting transparencies.

Go easy on ya?? Hell, I'm glad your here.. Theres not many of us that get bitten by the widow's allure, so the more the merrier in my book..
Currently i can report that the FDE is 99% done and awaiting final QA testing. Textures havent really been started yet, though Roger-Wilco66 could give you the specifics on those, and the Physical model, and I believe the textures, are waiting on N2056's magic touch. We are currently implementing and testing effective ways that single throttle/no peddle users can experience the aircraft to the same level of quality and enjoy-ability that the multi-throttle/peddle users will have. We are also discussing weapons and effects as we've stayed pretty light on those due to the possible need to make adjustments for P3D.
So too sum it up, we're progressing slowly and waiting on peoples primary priorities to finish so that we can continue with the P-61.
Let me know if theres anything you need. we'll do our best to see that you get it..

Oh and, please feel free to ask me anything you want about the widow. Truth told, If I dont know it, it probably hasnt been written..

Welcome at the SOH DC1973, as I noticed this was your first post. I'm really pleased to see another project and don't worry that it is a model somebody else is also working on. I'm sure your model will have something the other one doesn't and the other way round. I personally think it looks quite promising and I can assure you I really appreciate your efforts

    Cheers,

Thanks guys, I really appreciate your kind words! I'm really enjoying the process of building the P-61, although it can be frustrating at times as there's so much to learn! I got into this when virtual reality became a thing. I'm a trained PPL in real life but colour-blind so I couldn't pursue a career in aviation. VR has filled that gap nicely and it's thrilling to sit "inside" an aircraft in a manner that's so close to the real experience of flying.

I couldn't believe that there wasn't a high-def Black Widow for FSX / P3D hence why I took this project on back in March. I'm with you all that it's an awesome airplane and represented so many firsts for aviation that were combined into a single aircraft. It's been my "learning" project and will probably be freeware, depending on how good I can make the project. And I'm more than sure that there's only one thing better than a Widow for flight sim, and that's two of them

Many thanks as well for all your offers of help, I'll also hopefully in time be able to help others here as I get better at modelling. It's certainly become an addictive hobby

    Hey DC??
    Youve got a PM ..

Now, I cant speak for anyone other than myself here, but i can certainly take an educated guess that learning, growing and sharing experiences and knowledge, is important to the great majority of us. Especially those of us who have been doing this a very long time. There's also a website dedicated to just that very thing. Giants have lived there, and I've been honored to call some of them friend.. Here's the addy: http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/

PS:: Would it be possible to see that VC from the side and top??

    Here you go!

Very early days though so not much in place at the moment and there are polygons aplenty that can be removed to clean up.

Ah, FSDeveloper! I love that site and contribute occasionally, having build some proximity animated hangars and marshallers for FSX. Now, if only P3D would support conditional animations...

it looks great so far . not a bad job of it at all.. Thank you ..
I'm also running into challenges with P3D, in regards to a boat i've been developing.. So much to learn, and for me, learning is like teaching a brick how to fly.. ::sigh:: oh well.. we march on ::LOL:: ..

Oh we've already taught a brick how to fly. It's called.the Piper Arrow. Lol.

They've done a hell of a job haven't they?! It's definitely the best one I've seen yet, which just makes me want to build my own to the same standard. I should have it finished by around 2176

I was going to say, They already did, it's called the F-4 Phantom II
Watch what happens when one get's a double flame-out. They don't glide, so much as fall.

Eagerly looking forward to seeing the Black Widow fly in FSX! It's a plane that's been missing for a long time.
Thanks very much for all the good work.

It's the PBR engine. They only use I think 2-3 textures sheets total. The specukar file includes the bump map, specular, reflection and specular as commonly used in FS. All housed within the RGBA channels
