Hey guys,
Just a reminder of why many of us are here. August, 1942 was a critical month for the Americans, Soviets, Japanese, British, Italians, Free French, Canadians, and the Poles.
What happened, you ask?
August 7th, 1942: The Battle of Guadalcanal begins.
August 19th, 1942: Operation Jubilee (The Dieppe raid / fiasco)
August 10th-15th, 1942: Operation Pedestal journeys through the Mediterranean. The evening of August 12th through daylight on the 15th is the most critical period.
North Africa: The First Battle of El Alamein had ended in a stalemate: The Afrika Korps is almost within reach of Alexandria and Cairo.
August 23rd, 1942 (Approx): The Battle of Stalingrad begins in earnest.
On August 25th, 1942: The Battle of the Eastern Solomons and the Battle of Miine Bay began.
The next six months would prove critical. By February, 1943, Guadalcanal had been wrestled from the Japanese, the German 6th Army surrendered at Stalingrad, the Axis was being squeezed out of North Africa, (although this would not be completed until May, 1943) and the Allies in Europe had learned they were not yet strong enough to land on the shores of Continental Europe.
