Vultee XP-54 - Texture Artist Needed

    Howdy Good People, :-)

Just finished mapping this (filler project) experimental aircraft for textures and looking for a texture artist willing to put in the time to do textures with a basic paint kit with panel lines and usual noise and grime.

I have reference pics (not many), 3-views, etc to help.

Give me a shout if you are interested.

    Thanks

I just read about the XP-54 in an old AAHS Journal!

I'm not very good with panel lines and I'm hopeless with the usual noise and grime. I mostly just change markings and sometimes colors on textures that others create. There are many painters around SOH who are much better than I am at creating textures from scratch.

If nobody else steps forward I could give it a shot. I could probably get the major panel lines, but not the noise and grime, so the plane would look like it just rolled out of the paint shop, not like it must have looked after being flown a few times. I sure hope someone can do better than that! But if not...

    Mick --

I would welcome your brushwork on this model, Nothing wrong with a factory fresh version.

Yup, there were only two prototypes. I reckon they were factory fresh, albeit modified dozens of times and a bit raggy looking at times. :-) I am not looking for expert work here; heck, I created this in 9 days, borrowed and mod'd parts from my inventory; bent, banged, and molded into shape. Mike Kelly stepped up last night via Email but I will put this out for anyone who wants to take a shot at this. You have only yourself to please.

Mick, my gosh, you are more particular than I am about this stuff. I'll get a package together for you and Mike and anyone else who wants to take a shot at it. I appreciate your interest and time.

Whoa! I never saw this coming! And it was just a few weeks ago I added Jeff Nissen's 54 to my sim.
    Happy day!

I could not find a downloadable version of his 54. Anyhow, I wanted a project to use potentially for a video tutorial, although this may not be the best candidate having now struggled through it.
Also, could not find any cockpit pics of this aircraft so I borrowed one from my Republic xp72 project; fit perfectly. :-)

Vultee made only 2 prototypes of this before it was cancelled: 11210 and 11211.

11210 finally got painted but 211 never did remaining in bare metal.

It was done in by role change (mid-altitude fighter to high-altitude interceptor/pursuit/escort) and failure to deliver workable engines from P&W or Lycoming.

It's interesting no photo-reconnaissance version of this bird ever seemed to be proposed. It's got the space in the nose for a battery of cameras and with two drop tanks between the tail booms and the pilot's pod, it would seem to have had excellent range.

The pilot entry/exit method was certainly an engineering marvel.

According to my info, it was the first pilot ejection seat. Of course for that to work successfully, they had to also eject the props in the process to avoid making mincemeat of the pilot. This all came about because of the role change requiring this to become a pressurized aircraft for high altitude work that also required a fixed (un-open-able) canopy. Added a couple thousand pounds to the empty weight that hurt performance as well.

So, several engineering firsts with this aircraft.

Not bad for a "quickie" project Milton.

Those darn underpowered Lycomings. Wonder what it could have done with a more powerful engine.

    Hello Milton,

That's one of a kind original project ! It looks extremely promising, as usual.
I might try ! (I suppose you have template with all parts defined ?)

Oh sure, I go away for the holidays on vacation and come back to find this in your queue. I can't believe you actually modeled this and I mean that in a good way. I'll have to see what my book on this has for you just in case you need any information. I'm referring to American Secret Pusher Fighters of World War Two. Thanks for developing another great addition for FS.

I'd be interested to see what I could do with it.

Well, it never really got out of the starting blocks production-wise so not surprising. The 1st prototype did get 86 flights logged and the 2nd only one decent flight to get dismantled on arrival.

Originally designed to do 515 MPH before the role change and P&W failure to produce the required engine.

I set up the flight model to the Lycoming specs.

Of course, pretty simple stuff too; 4 templates at 2048 X 2048.

    FS9 or FSX package?

I can't believe it either Sir :-) Was looking for a candidate for a video tutorial so tried this. Not the best candidate but decided to finish it anyhow.

I would be interested in whatever you have. Thanks

Mike Kelly has stepped up last night via Email to do the detailed textures and paint kit.

If others are interested as well, I will make the package available to you too.

I have updated teh package so both FSX and FS9 components are included.

Once I get back from dinner out, I will upload that package and send a link to those of you who asked.

Thanks for your interest; it's really appreciated.

Wow, the Swoose Goose is one of my favorite fighters (or would have been if it went into production). Milton, your "filler" projects are better than most other's "top shelf" products!

    Really looking forward to this!

    Sounds for a Lycoming H-2470

Okay, great; we have several focusing on textures now so I will get back to finalizing the cockpit/pilot animations, getting gauge faces changed, and working on the flight model. Thanks to all of you who have expressed interest in the project and for joining the effort to see it to fruition.

Not sure what an H-2470 Lycoming sounds like with 103 cu. in. per cylinder but I know it sounded good. Hopefully we can find something like that or have someone step up to creating such an orchestra. :-)
