    Recent Update Snafu?

I updated to the current Sketchup 2017 this morning and upon loading the program I got this:

The program can't start because api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

Later on, I loaded ModelConverterX and attempted to load a "dae" for compiling and got the same error message. I haven't run any Windows update in several weeks and these programs have worked fine in the interim. Microsoft suggested installing the current C++ Redistributable. . .that made no difference. It was also suggested that I run the windows update and install any current updates. I tried that but the update process seems to get hung up (it processed for several hours without returning any results. . .even after rebooting and making another attempt).

Has anyone run into this problem?

I might also mention that Sketchup 2016 runs without any problems. I may try uninstalling the 2017 version and see if the problem with MCX persists. It could be something that 2017 installed that is causing this error message.

UPDATE: No change after uninstalling Sketchup 2017. Now trying to install just that dll but it requires going through the Windows Updater which, as before, appears to be in a hung position so I'm not gaining any ground.

No other suggestions? I have tried innumerable "fixes", all professing to be "the fix", however the problem remains. I will run virus scans next to see if I have picked up something that affects only the windows updater. . .as if, lol

This entire process is such a Zoo, lol, lol. To answer you question Roger. . .No I hadn't been there, so I tried it. Got an error message that told me my computer did not have the required files to accept the program and it referred me to Hotfix KB299926. Great, (although I believe I've been down this road before, lol). . .I download that hotfix and run it and low and behold it goes right into the Windows Updater which, as mentioned previously never does anything because it hangs, lol. So to summarize. . .everything seems to have gone awry because the hotfix wasn't installed. . .but the hotfix can't be installed because the Windows Update utility gets hung up and doesn't process anything. This is going swimmingly thus far, lol, lol

Try Blender with the FSDeveloper FSX tool set plugin, once I started using it I ditched Sketchup within a week. There are many tutorial videos on FSDeveloper, having Sketchup experience also helps getting up and running with Blender quickly.

Hi Falcon409 I will join your club for windows updates not working. I'm using W7 64 and the last update that installed was in September 2016 KB3182203 and since September Windows update hasn't worked it just hangs tried all the fix's suggested by Microsoft and on the net but nothing seems to work.

Ditto on Windows Vista Ultimate 64 update no longer working. Tried everything but to no avail. Leads me to believe that MS has shut down updates for the older programs. If so, too bad they haven't told anyone.

I had this happen... twice! I ended up getting Microsoft Support involved and both times there was a missing update which was needed but never came through. The Support folks were very helpful and understood the problem, but like you Falcon... I tried all of the suggested patches and hotfix apps first. No matter what I did the updater just hung, and hung and hung. On my system, the culprit was hiding out under "scvhost.exe:1020". (net services). I'm keeping my fingers crossed hoping it doesn't come unglued a 3rd time.

If you have the "Process Explorer" app from Microsoft, you can tell if there is a problem by looking at the "Idle Performance" at the top of the panel. It should be around 98 - 99% without any apps running except the explorer.exe and whatever services you use for anti-virus programs, etc. When the updater is hung, the "Idle Performance" level drops to about 68 - 74%.

Windows 7 Professional, and Windows 7 Home Premium, 2 separate machines.

Thanks to Tom (Blackbird686), it has been corrected. You could get lost in the myriad of "fixes" offered both through Microsoft's Knowledge Base and other sites, but it took about 20 minutes with MS Tech Support Chat to get it corrected. Thanks for the HU Tom.

Is there a reason not updating to Windows 10?

I tried it once, kept it for a few weeks, had too many problems with the sim, the general operation of it, rolled back to Win7. This is a good stable platform for me.

Glad you got it sorted Falcon,

I came across a website/thread last night which outlined a fix for a PC using more cpu power than normal due to Windows update and Windows 10 data gathering. This made something click in my memory, and I remembered I also had an issue a while back with Windows update hanging, and not being able to get rid of the Windows 10 "ads".

I will post the link here as it may be of use to someone else.

Kind of old news now the Windows 10 fiasco is practically over for most of us, but it may still affect someone who has their Windows Update set to manual updates who hasn't updated for a while.

    Cheers,
