I have FSX SE, and have to use the SmallPartRejectRadius=1.0 line in my FSX.cfg file, otherwise I have the same issue as you do - i.e. disappearing AI at distance.
Funny thing was I had to have it set to 4.0 I think when I had FSXA!

With SmallPartRejectRadius=0 working fine but hopefully this does not give me low frames in dense places

Glad you got it fixed!
Actually, I seem to remember having to set SmallPartRejectRadius=(can't remember the value) in SP2, but I now recall that I didn't need it with FSXA.
I might have my old FSX.cfg backups somewhere so I can check, but I do recall from what I read, the setting was different on the various versions of FSX.
All a bit confusing!

Should be there another way only for AI traffic not for all pixels/textures
I am not able to find SmallPartRejectRadius in my FSX.cfg file....
UPDATE: figured it out! NC
For me in Steam, it worked fine. It is hard on the frames, so I always disable it by putting "//" in front of it.
