New Project

So, for a long time I've had the desire to fly the CONVAIR XF-92A. America's first delta wing. Though it was an experimental.bird it was the testbed into CONVAIR's delta legacy.

I guess this is an open call of sorts. There's no way I could do this project on my own. I simply have not all the skills required for such an undertaking. However, I thought since there's is so much talent on display here at SOH why not ask who would be interested in teaming up on a project? This would be a no time line, no pressure, and no $$ project. Simply a labor of love and passion for aviation.

If you are interested, simply reply to this thread with what you are able to do. I don't foresee an aircraft like this ever coming out of one of the payware groups as it would probably not be everyone's cup of tea....but I sadly niche of FS had long been neglected...at any rate. If you're interested in a neat project of historical value maybe we can all come together to produce something educational and fun at the same time!

That would be an interesting , I do have a couple books with details on the type, but nothing really heavy, RAZBAM did the F-102 so may shed some light on its flight dynamics , Chuck Yeager tested the XF-92 .. 170MPH on land gently held the nose just above the Muroc and test pilot Shannon mentioned control were unfavourable ... interesting one to do.

If significance and educational interest should be a prime motivator, why not settle for a true X-plane? Since they were essentially in the public domain (NACA/NASA), reference documentation may be easier to come by.

I take it that's a not interested? Dang it! I had a feeling...I was actually hoping you might be up for some piece of it....I've found your "out of the box" tools quite refreshing. No this is not a pathetic attempt to patronize you, I was actually hoping you of all people might actually have interest in it... Well, if you change your mind... I'll be contemplating the high likelihood that you are correct...however, even so, still should try....it's one of those aircraft that I simply like...great or not. 2 variations...one with the original engine and canopy...and one with the afterburner and cage canopy...anyway....one can hope!

Very sure I have lot info the XF-108 or least more than most , the idea of weapon bays for the sidewinders .. really ahead in thinking for the time, tho was standard on the Dagger and Dart.

Have you considered taking the upgrade from texture artist to modeler?
Gordon did, and so far, it seems to work out for him really well.

The 3D model is the very core of every aircraft add-on since it can not be altered. So if you can't generate enough interest or invest money to have someone do it for you, you'll have to do it yourself or put the entire project right back into the daydream corner. All other aspects of an add-on, i.e. flight dynamics, sounds, textures and gauges is aftermarket stuff. Just look at Milton's projects. He does the models and outside help (or interest) comes a-flocking.

I have considered it. I have some version of blender installed and I actually tried aboutique 2 years ago to start this project...but with 3 kids and everything else going on I'd have drop a few things to make time for it...though not off table. I might have to learn it. That's what eventually drove me to make metal skins was the lack of them and the fact that others didn't have the Ircraft I was interested in...Gordon really mentored me in repainting. Great human being!

I am always interested in the x-planes and I want all of them. I do doubt however I can contribute with anything. 3D modeling is something my brain does not wrap around, I have tried many times and failed every time. Texture work is the only thing I can do a decent job on...besides flying the thing.
