Wouldn't it be great if we had HMS Eagle, HMS Centaur, HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark. Throw Hermes in there for good measure!

A bit sad that we dont have any royal navy carriers which actually flew sea hawks (the flying stations ark model shows a the very different ark than how it looked with sea hawks) in fsx/p3d. Did the sea hawk fly from any of the straight deck carriers?

Repainting since FS5..
It's service life wasn't long. I looked hard today to find any shots of one on Victorious before I realised that Vic was in extended refit from '50-'58 which covered (pretty much) the period Sea Hawks were at sea. They served on all the carriers I listed above.. neither Centaur, Bulwark or Albion had much of an angle (if any).. it was all in the deck paint!!

Yes mate.. there are the odd few which use custom fonts and why.. I've absolutely no idea. A few I did for the Scimitar were the similar (as in odd) and for these, I had to find the closest font and merge letters then hand draw in the bits (side number 154 springs to mind.. there's no font on earth like that!!).

I'm planning to make a version of the Hr. Ms. Karel Doorman. I'm using FSDS 3.51. I managed to make a test version (two squares) with a landable deck. What I can't do in the model is incorporate arrestor cables. maybe someone here knows how to do that? Perhaps With ModelConverterX? I ordered a book about the Hr. Ms. Karel Doorman. This will take considerable time to complete.....But I made ships before!
Cees
Adding arrestor cables is not as difficult as you'd think. It's something of an 'unwritten rule' but does work. I recently added wires to a ratty model of Hermes I have and they work!!
Add them to the model in MCX as effects (first selection.. can't remember what it's called off the top of my head).. then line each one up where it needs to be (you can see it in MCX like any other effect). For example, most carriers have 4 wires so you start on one side (port) and add the line attachpt_cable_1_1. Call the effect this even though you can't actually select the effect. Then on the stbd side.. add attachpt_cable_1_2 (placing it exactly using MCX). Move on to the next wire (add effect) and call the effect attachpt_cable_2_1 in exactly the same way followed by attachpt_cable_2_2 then 3_1 then 3_2 and finally 4_1 and 4_2. Left, right, left, right e t c.

Cees.. it wasn't Hermes, it was HMS Campania.. a CFS2 escort carrier I converted. It needed a hard deck first then the shot below shows how I added the wires. With attached object editor open, I think I selected ADD/'Empty' then typed the attach points into the effect name pane on the RH side. Hopefully, the screenie will show what I mean.

And catapults too?
Cees
That's good news! Makes me confident enough to start with the "dikke boot".
Cees
Yes matey I didn't bother with cats on the Campania as everything that lands on it doesn't need help getting off again!! There's one entry I'm not sure of and that's the angle of the effect/attachpt. I checked out numerous carriers to see what they used and believe it or not, the vast majority don't have any angle entry at all So.. I'd just go for the bottom line entries (L/R.. Fwd/Aft.. Up/Down).
I believed for a long time that it was a black art known only by a select few of the inner sanctum but in reality.. it's as simple as adding a light or wake effect

Nice one Peter
Here's a lazy paint from me.. WF159. No Sqn markings as it was still under CS(A) control Jan-Sep '53. What it DOES mean is that you can go anywhere in it!!
Available HERE
I've had a quick go at the droptanks on this one (something I admit I'd not looked at until WV824:122-C). 122's tanks match the white underside much better and likewise.. the tanks with WF159 match the sky underside. Rob's originals didn't match anything!

Nice one!

I have talked with Lazarus and he is planning to revisit the Majestic class and rework/update the model. It might also include a dedicated Karel Doorman/Minas Gerais model with the new island and deck.
Looking forward to see your work Cees!
Dave B; A Centaur class carrier would have been something! It would fit more or less any post war FAA jet up to the Phantom. Maybe just scale up the Majestic and make two cats :-)
Amazing how narrow even the big Ark Royal was before the Phantom modification, the angled deck was just 5.5 degrees!

Repainting since FS5..
Agree.. and 5.5deg is a mere bulge on the side.. nothing like the 7deg on Hermes (or was it 8?). We have so many aircraft that would fit this class, its a shame we don't have the carriers to use them on Maybe Lazarus can rustle something up from the Majestics..

I have been thinking about the idea of painting up Victorious as Hermes. Some similarities with the angle of the deck and big search radar until we get something dedicated..

Repainting since FS5..
That's not a bad idea
Oh.. Hermes deck was 6.5deg according to Janes Fighting Ships '73/'74. Ark had a whopping 8.5deg angle!!
I had a go (another go) at painting up a re-engineered Hermes this afternoon and the results were less than satisfactory. The deck map is wild as well as off-centre!!
EDIT: Thinking about it, the deck park models would need to be repainted too so a Vic repaint would be rather more of a challenge. Easier (I think) to make the Majestic's look like Centaur's by painting the angle on the deck.

Just uploaded to here, a fictional repaint for the Royal Canadian Navy. The Canadians and Australians both evaluated the Sea Hawk for use. This is a what if texture if the RCN went with this instead of used ex USN Banshees. This represents a Sea Hawk assigned to VF 870 HMCS Shearwater.

Been Doing some digging trying to find out anything I can about these Sea Hawks that were evaluated by the RCN and RAN. The only photo evidence I could Find was this B/W photo of one aboard Melbourne on the Australian War Memorial website, circa 1956. I've marked out the aircraft in the image. It was taken during sea trials which I suppose were undertaken whilst still in UK waters. This would probably be the same case for the RCN during Bonnie's trials I'd imagine.
So I guess they used Royal Navy A/C whilst getting their respective carriers fitted out to save them buying examples to ship home only to decide they didn't want them. It also mentions it as a Sea Hawk in the description. https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/301012/
hope that clears that mystery up. I know someone was wondering earlier.
Kindest Regards
Hooky
Yeah, I guess there is no clean deck park model of the Victorious.
The 8.5 degree deck for the ark must have been in the Phantom years? I think it was 5.5 up to the last major rebuild to handle the Phantom.

You can see the white danger line outside of the landing field run all the way up to the front bow.. Probably only the right cat which could theoretically be used together with landing aircraft. Must have made parking landed aircraft a real problem as well.

Michael Davis (I think?) had a HMS Eagle model more or less finished for many years ago, but he never finished it

That would be Mark Harper and the deck was/is axial on his version if I remember right. Would be nice to have it however it arrivesMichael Davis (I think?) had a HMS Eagle model more or less finished for many years ago, but he never finished it
Great links there JO. It's the first time I've noticed the launch tied against the stern below the flight deck!!
Re the deck angle.. Eagle had the same during her Scimitar/Sea Vixen/Buccaneer days. Whether done specifically for (in anticipation of) the Phantoms I'm not sure. Eagle was supposed to have them before the money ran out and the decision was taken to decommission her and keep Ark IV going. Not so good for the navy but a bonus for the RAF (the navy no longer needed what had been ordered so the aircraft were diverted to the RAF).
