Sad news indeed.
Swiss authorities have just held a news conference where it was confirmed all 20 aboard (3 crew, 17 passengers) were killed in the crash.
HB-HOT (c/n 6595) was delivered to the Swiss Air Force in October of 1939 and served until 1981. She was transferred to JU-Air in October of 1982 and returned to airworthiness in 1985.
She was also famous for depicting the aircraft that dropped Clint Eastwood and his men in the 1968 war epic "Where Eagles Dare", and more recently depicted the Luftwaffe Ju-52 in the 2008 war movie "Valkyrie".
I read that in the news yesterday as well.
Tragic.....
So sad.
According to Swiss media, JU-Air has announced that they will resume flights from August 17th onwards.
Meanwhile, one of the (reportedly 20+) eyewitnesses has come forward and has been interviewed by the press. A former military pilot, he witnessed the entire crash sequence. According to his statement, the aircraft was flying normal, until it suddenly made a left-hand turn, dropped its left wing and departed controlled flight. In his interview, he expressed his suspicion that the pilots encountered an engine failure and subsequently lost control.
