Is there a tool out there that works with the new dds textures?
There's a few birds out there I want to repaint but FS repaint won't open them because the models use huge DDS textures....

I use this tool by Martin Wright. He has done a lot for the CFS and FS community

DXTBmp handles DDS textures very well but I haven't found a way of converting .bmp to .dds with it
 Save as DDS shouldn't be more complicated than saving as DTX format

You need the latest version of DXTBmp and the latest DLLs to use it for DDS.
I had a few problems with Imagtool from the SDK, so i prefer the Directx Texture Tool, but for that you have to have the DX SDK installed.
For painting i would use Gimp with Plugins: http://www.devmaster.net/forums/showthread.php?t=4025
I highly recommend Adobe Photoshop Pro. It is like the Gmax of paint programs. It has so many 'effects' things you can do to layers, filters also, which are basically effects, each one tuneable for angle of light, shadow, etc.
With Photoshop (PS) you can then go to the nVidia website, developers center, and download the tools that work with PS, such as the DDS editing addon that allows you to work on DDS textures and save them, including their Alpha channel. Another tool is the Bump Map compiler. This will compile a BM (no pun intended) or 'bumpie' from a gray bumpmap draft you made, then switch the Alphas around to work with FSX.
You can get older Editions of PS, such as 6.0 on Disc format now and then from people selling their CD's at Ebay.com and Amazon.com, but they are getting rare. CS4 of PS is really nice but pricey. If you can afford it its worth it, but thats if you can afford it.
But.. DXTBmp will convert them also. I like speed. I need speed. Being able to do 'all' DDS work in one location is awesome and saves me by using one less compiler. However, I work in FS9 too, so I use DXTBmp daily for the FS9 graphics.

I use corel photoshop pro X2. And I just convert the DDS to Jpeg using the DDS converter 2.1 and have no problems
The Corel PAINTshop Pro is the one. Sorry I put the wrong word in there. But when I alter pics or textures I always say "I'm photoshopping" Sorry for confusion
for adobe photoshop their is a plugin by nvidia allowing to save direct from painting only thing bise choosing dds format is not forgetting to flip the texture you save!
