Thanks, Bill. Good stuff. The challenges (and learning curve) are coming from adding textures and porting over some aircraft from FS9. I'm learning that when textures are added to FSX aircraft, not all the readme.txt entries are consistent which in turn caused the issue I first posted. Same goes for some port-over aircraft from FS9 as the FS9 aircraft.cfg goes by different rules.

Dumonceau, do not give up. It took me awhile to master the startup. Only after I watched the video on YouTube several times did I get it down right. BTW, the Milviz T-38 is just as challenging. --WH

Yep, I know I won't always have the ability to get up close photos of every building I will do, but it sure is nice to be this close to the airport and have the chance to go there and get new photos whenever I need them. I guess the two things I'm working through right now are getting the textures onto as few sheets as possible (right now, every texture is separate) and "where do I stop" with the custom buildings and rely on default or other objects to fill in, lol.

You ain't gonna believe this.... but I figured it out. You might want to sit down for this one. As I mentioned earlier, I purchased the Flight Leader X from Warbirdsim and added a lot of repaints. Well, what I found out is that the entry for had a different ui_manufacturer= entry. Every one of the entries including the default textures had a ui_manufacturer= North American. The only one that showed up properly had ui_manufacturer= North American Aviation (all without quotes, BTW). As it just so happens my install of the Warbirdsim P-51D also has ui_manufacturer= North American Aviation, so this might have been a factor as well. Anyways, all I had to do was to make every manufacturer entry as 'North American Aviation' and now all the aircraft are listed under Warbirdsim. :isadizzy:

There are 53 entries The changes only affect , meaning it is the only aircraft that appears under a "Single Engine Prop" or "Warbirdsim". The additions I made to each aircraft were copied from another, working aircraft.cfg. The only thing modified was for 'ui_createdby='. I'm still trying to figure out why 1 out of 53 works, but the other 52 do not. If there is a typo, I haven't found it. Sigh.

Over the weekend I decided to get a few P-51 Mustangs over to my FSX install, so I picked up the Warbirdsim Flight Leader X and spent a good part of yesterday adding repaints and flying around. Towards the end of the day I decided to add some missing lines to each entry to associate the planes with Warbirdsim and added the following lines for each entry: ui_typerole="Single Engine Prop" ui_createdby="Warbirdsim" Today I discovered that this works with only one entry, and all the other entries are still listed as 'Unknown' for some unknown reason. Why would it work for one entry and not the others?? :salute: Weird. Just plain weird.

There are four of these large hangars on the airport, so this will fill the flightline pretty quickly and only one of them has changed considerably after being renovated by a "wealthy tenant", lol. . . .but at least I have the basic structure and I can add on to make the new portions he added.

the Greek Phantoms are regularly found at Andravida AB, Tanagra AB, Larissa AB... occasionally Aktion and sometimes Souda AB, only time you'd likely see them above Rodos is if they're toying with a Turkish F-16 who's sniffing around the border :icon_lol: i don't think it's economics... well partially it is, but along with the A-7's they're Greeces Primary attack aircraft and until next spending review (next year) no replacements can be looked at... but in saying that Greece have looked at Flanker and Typhoon... to replace the Mirage's as i recall, Phantom once again is too loved and keeps escaping the retirement :icon_lol:

sad to hear this i lived under the Approach at Larissa AB in Greece till i was 6 or 7-ish... Phantoms were my daily fix... used to go right over the top of the house, i remember my mum being angry once because she had put an empty glass on the wall just as a Phantom was doing a pass for some event, it hit the burners to climb right over the house and the glass went 'walkies' off the wall... me laughing, my mum shooing me away from the broken glass :icon_lol: good news is Ferry that Greece have no plans to retire theirs any time soon, they're determined to be the last Phantom Operator, so the old 'brick' (there's a saying 'the RF-4E, flying proof that given enough thrust even a brick can fly') will be about for a few years yet...

Do that, Matt - Yeovilton used to be my regular aviation haunt - I love that place. Years ago, your visit was almost certainly rewarded with the Sea Fury, Firefly or Swordfish on a check flight or all three departing for an airshow. The museum was sensational - that's where I fell in love with the big American radial CATS! Big, staunch, beautifully engineered, carrierworthy babies towering over the FA birds. When I was at secondary school in Torquay during the early '70's, we'd get a Camberra flyover every Thursday as regular as clockwork (undersurfaces yellow/black diagonal stripes). A REALLY extra treat would be the appearance of a Sea Vixen - man what a lorry of a crate!

ACA2007 lite is what I've been using for FS9, and somewhat for FSX. The problem is that with FSX it gives false errors whenever textures are aliased to another aircraft. Yesterday, I tried their latest version 1.0.6 (I believe) and it creates an exception error under Win8. Fortunately, I had a copy of their earlier version 1.0.0 that still works but with the false readings as stated.

I used to have several utility programs for FS9 that I used for scanning the aircraft.cfg files for any entry errors such as missing texture folders, etc. Is there anything specific to FSX that does the same?? Thanks

Hmmm... this is going to take some time to answer, and break down my actual time in percentages. Let's see if I have all the key activities.. -- Research my next purchase, aircraft or scenery -- Acquiring and installing the purchase or freeware that I select -- Learning how to fly the new aircraft -- Searching for and installing new repaints -- Searching for and testing tweaks and modifications on new aircraft -- Taking short flights to view tweaks, modifications and new textures -- Taking short flights with morning coffee just to flip switches, listen to the sounds, and view the scenery -- Taking longer flights with adult beverage to flip more switches, test navigation skills and get away from doing chores, watching the evening news, etc.

  1. OleBoy's PaintShop: How it became what it was, and is today.

Since the times back in 2009 when I decided to get involved in flight simulators, it began confusingly. Flight alone seemed dull and lacking. Mainly due to the cartoonish surroundings experienced. Crayolas to coloring books. The scenery and aircraft appeared to have been painted by children. While not getting drawn to the experience of visual impact as others, I sought out ways to visually enhance my virtual world. That was the day my learning to paint things in this form of reality began. And my quest of personal perfection.

I spent a lot of time here on the forums, reading and viewing artwork done by others. Absorbing every hint and tip possible. I learned early on being an outsider with a talent was deemed a threat to those with the know. Getting a simple answer to any question was like getting blood from a turnip. I witnessed several other members who asked questions pertaining to repainting. I also witnessed those people who knew the answer never respond. But each time there was any form of response, those that (knowing what I know now) did know the answer, still would not respond. As time passed by and my learning curve began straightening. My knowledge intake and out-go was becoming more fluid as I gained a better understanding of the process in gaining the looks of reality in the virtual world. I was craving more. This form of expression was addicting to say the very least.

As time passed I got a bit better acquainted with a few fellow painters here. I felt a feeling of acceptance. And my drive became stronger. I finally reached a point where I could ask a question, and get an answer.

Instead of (not those mentioned previously) an answer more in the form of a riddle, or no answer at all. Child's play coming indirectly from those apparently feeling uncomfortable. Can you imagine? Someone else with talents, like blooming flowers in the spring, wanted to know what they know. I won't say their names. I won't throw them under the bus. I am a better person. But I would love to expose to everyone who they are. (sinister laugh) I will say this however. They are well known in the payware development side of the community!!!

Time passed. Knowledge absorbed. I was becoming more and more proficient. Simplistic lineage schemes became boring. Repainting was addicting. And frustrating!!! Sharp curves in the road that slowed me. A challenge. A very self accomplished challenge that I got beyond as I learned more. My need for more challenging schemes began. Which can be seen by looking at my work in progression from earliest to most recent in the SOH archives. I've come a long way.

I enjoy doing graphics on these little virtual toys. Now, it's easy. But I've come to the conclusion that too many take things for granted in what I (and others) do. So, unfortunately, I decided it was time to close OleBoy's Paintshop.

I hope those who have downloaded my work now and in the past enjoy them.

    OleBoy

Do you still need a quote for the i7Core system or did you decide to stay with the older 775 socket system?
  6. Hello Again, OleBoy,

Thank you, indeed, for your compliments re: my ships. It's very much appreciated. Even in a lightplane, the amount of work is tremendous as I'm sure you're aware. That's the Porterfield, alright! I guess it dosen't look too bad after all the years, eh?

The file at fsdownload.com is my original CP-65. I guess you got it, eh?
The file at flightsim.com is a re-paint, and very nice, I'd like to say. You'll need the original model ( which you have ) to use it. I think they included a new prop texture and some mods to the *.air file.

Here are a couple of screens of the last 2 aircraft I was working on before I backed out of FS. Take a look....

I was trying to get some mileage out of the Kinner engine. The Fleet was going to be for Leon Louis, a long time Fleet devote, but alas, he's gone.

OK, now, the Waco engine for the G.A.S. models. I built the Wright J-5 used on their ATO. If you're not familliar with the Wacos, they are sacred icons in the aviation world.

    http://www.russellw.com/photoalbum/p...yle=LightTable

Just the engine is mine, though, all the rest is G.A.S. built. The Wacos used to be payware. You may want to D/L just to check out the engine. It was for a Travel-Aire I was building at the time, but Bill Lyons beat me to it.

Paintkits: All I can do is see if I can round up the Photoshop files that were used for each A/C. If I can do that, I'll zip 'em up and send 'em off to you. Then you can re-paint to your hearts content! It should be much easier with the layered Photoshop originals. I'll do that over the weekend. Thanks for your interest in my 'ol geezer ships! It's nice to know that even after the years they generate some following. I guess you could D/L the Ryan SC-W. It's also at flightsim.com. It was built out of consideration for Russell Williams and his great vintage A/C site. Here's a screen or two...click on Simulator Photos.
