Part of the issue is how knowledgeable the model designer is about the meaning of those speeds when translating from sometimes very inexact historical data. Innumerable sources quote simply one 'max speed' (not even specifying KIAS, KTAS, MPH) and certainly not recording whether this was "max. attainable speed in level flight" or design Vne. Often a modeler will not question or cross-check this data and simply "makes it so". In fact some of the historical data from the WW II era was deliberately vague in this regard for propaganda purposes. However, we have found examples where Vne was used in the .cfg file, but then the model was tweaked to allow it to reach toward/near this in powered level flight, not just as a limit in a dive. Alternately, aircraft models that can reach real-world Vne (interpreted by the modeler as "max. speed" - level) in level flight then have a .cfg limiting speed much higher to enable speed to increase in a dive. These anomalies don't always show until the model is flight tested against r/w data. Others have more-or-less accurate numbers but the model has been crafted to reach that number at the worst altitude and thus is far too fast at Sea Level. For things like the events of which Paul speaks then would require corrections to be made (and somehow enforced) or the model rendered unacceptable since there is no current way to monitor changes or accuracy of an individual's flight model. While I agree that it would be useful to be able to decompile the data from the tables, building a tool to do so might be more hours of work ( P likes to play with data :icon_lol: ) than the flight testing if done on an ongoing basis.

You have it pretty close. See if this helps It could only receive one signal at a time so rcvr had to be switched from Nav to Com and back. That's the switch on the right. As it was a mechanical slide it also contained the "NAV" or "COM label that showed in the appropriate window. Off/IDENT switch at bottom was for Nav rcvr audio. Yes, the yellow 'flag' should show Off/To/From, No, no Glideslope (VOR/LOC only) another good image here: http://djholman.csde.washington.edu/N5814L/Found/IMG_0746.jpg

The learning curve is steep. Most people started with FSDS then graduated to gMax and some on to Max and now there are other CAD programs such as Blender that are being used. Then there is a paint program to master and the techniques needed for your textures. Add to that C++ or XML gauge programming and don't forget the flight dynamics in the CFG and AIR files. And what about that sound file and then some special effects? And there is all the research time and in some cases monies involved to get the information needed for the model. All these things have been around since before FSX and now P3d but what has happened is the "Sim Community" has become jaded. We want the more highly detailed, high complexity models that FSX allows. For an individual designer, especially someone just starting out this can be extremely daunting and takes far more dedication then most are willing or able to give towards a hobby. Payware companies have teams of several people and a monetary incentive. Hummm? I wonder why there are very few freeware FSX native aircraft?

I posted a replacement model file in the downloads section to correct this. Sorry for the inconvenience.

That would be very much welcomed! I downloaded a few ratchet sounds and played with them but sound is a new thing for me to learn. In the aircraft.cfg under these points determine the extension and retraction times by the 12th and 13th values respectively. In this case they are all set to 20 and 30 seconds. point.0 = 1, -16.1456, 0, -4.9700, 1600, 0, 0.375, 30, 0.38, 2.5, 1.64, 20, 30, 1, 0, 0 point.1 = 1, 1.875, -5, -9.1215, 1800, 1, 1.2, 0, 0.34, 2.5, 1, 20, 30, 2, 0, 0 point.2 = 1, 1.8604, 5, -9.1273, 1800, 2, 1.2, 0, 0.34, 2.5, 1, 20, 30, 3, 0, 0 You can adjust these if you wish with the following consideration. The real duck requires 47 revolutions of the crank handle and it was not easy retracting so I just estimated these times to what seemed about right. Due to the 100 frame animation setting in the stock code I was limited to only 25 revolutions of the crank handle (I didn't want to rewrite the gear code) to get the correct number of turns but you don't have to worry about it since the animation time will follow the settings in the CFG.

The standard key or clicking on the crank handle in the VC should toggle the gear. You should see the crank turning and the gear indicator moving. The gear takes 30 seconds to fully retract. There is no sound when the gear is retracting or extending, I need to make a custom ratchet sound for it. Does anyone else have the same problem?

The original paint kit got so complicated with three different models that I am now breaking them up for each of the models. When I get it together I'll post a link for download. One of the problems I encountered was with the wing floats. Currently you can only paint them one color due to the way I overlaid the UVW maps. Since there are already some repaints done it would screw them up if I were to correct this. There was only one paint scheme that had two color wing floats and that was the USCG WWII version three tone paint, (sorry jankees), all other paint schemes had one color floats.

I will not be "around" as much as I thought when I originally made the entries and I'm not comfortable having folks wait for me to finish, so ... As of this post I need to withdraw my entry for the MSFS Mooney Bravo in FS9 ... MSFS (Jeppesen) weather ... Low Course .... Silver Class. Apologies to the staff for any inconvenience this causes ... and in advance of a possible second withdrawal of the remaining entry.

Hehe. Good question Terry, let's investigate... Quite simple, you would start up the impulse engines at .75 power and using both the shields and tractor beam, create a low pressure damping field around the lower hull. This would in effect, neutralize the Earth's gravity and allow the ship to gain altitude. Once sufficient height had been attained, the ship could have escaped the atmosphere under normal impulse power.

A new entry has been added to Add-Ons Library, category FSX American Aircraft Description: The Grumman J2F Duck (company designation G-15) was an American single-engine amphibious biplane. It was used by each major branch of the U.S. armed forces from the mid-1930s until just after World War II, primarily for utility and air-sea rescue duties. It was also used by the Argentine Navy, who took delivery of their first Duck in 1937. After the war, J2F Ducks saw service with independent civilian operators, as well as the armed forces of Colombia and Mexico. This is a work in progress and will always be WIP but it is comparable to the restoration of an antique auto in that it is not done but is an enjoyable drive to the car show. Unlike the first post of the Bad Duck this update is not passworded and is free to all. A new paint kit will be available to those who request it. Please read the ReadMe file for more information and credits. Thanks for downloading

Glad to hear you found your issue Duckie!!! One thing I've learned that last few weeks with going to Windows 7 (and a new computer) from XP is I've gotten into the habit of loading only one thing at a time and trying it after I've loaded it... Weeks ago when I started the swap over I loaded a bunch of stuff at once and ran into more issues than I could imagine - almost to the point I almost said the "hell with it' and was headed back to XP!! Then I decided to give it one last try and took a different approach (one thing at a time) and so far it's been working!!!! At least this way If I do have an issue - I got a good idea where it came from!!!! Anyways, glad to hear your back on track... Bill

Again thanks for the carrier model, as I suspected I have been able to graft a working carrier less model with the model you sent and have placed it at coordinates I chose north of hawaii with all working facilities. Was a bit tedious changing coordinates of all facilities by hand for this carrier to match the coordinates of the placed model, but it worked. I'm going to try tweeking the finished BGL with AFCAD and compile again, but all indications are we can create a working carrier and place it wherever we wish for practice, and for the race without special 'payware' tools.

Walking the Path

by Dangerousdave26 on January 12th, 2011 at 16:18

Throughout my life I have had several instances that have made me a believer in the concept of ghosts. This is the most interesting instance of them all.

Although it has been many years now since this event happened in my life, the memory of it is embedded in my brain. The names and places have not been changed to protect anyone. These events are how I remember them.

I was 21 years old when I went to work for my uncle’s family owned lawn and garden business.
