    Gmax is at TurboSquid and is free. The CFS3 SDKs are here in the SOH library; see the sticky thread above. 3ds Max 4.2? Forget it, they're on to version 2015 now and you just don't want to know how much. Gmax is not that hard to use (he says, more than five years later...:biggrin-new::biggrin-new:) but there's a ton to learn and serious work is needed. Cue Yoda voice and Muppetry: Much patience do you need. Yes, hmmm? I'm afraid the forums are littered with the remains of would-be modellers who hoped a week or two would do. Converting FS9 models to CFS3 is relatively straightforward if you have the source files for Gmax. If you don't, the ModelConverterX route is almost as much work as building from scratch. Shudders!     If what you've downloaded is a Gmax source file then it's a fairly straightforward job. If it's a model compiled and ready to fly in FS9 (which I suspect) then it's possible, but almost as much work as building a model from scratch. You must ask permission of the author and if it's a compiled model ask if you can have the Gmax source file. Some modellers are very generous that way. One of our CFS3 modellers has quite a catalogue of aircraft originally modelled by others which he has adapted for CFS3 and released.

    I'm making this another thread to keep the sticky above on topic. To build for Combat Flight Simulator 3 (CFS3) you need Gmax and the Aircraft, Vehicle and Building SDK for CFS3. The SDKs used to be available from Microsoft but the CFS Insider site is gone so they're all here in the SOH library. If you're building in any other modelling software you'll need to get the model into Gmax to export to the sim, unless by any chance you're using 3ds Max 4.2! :dizzy: Build your model like for any MS flight sim and link the various parts together in a proper hierarchy. At the top of the hierarchy is a Dummy object or a very small polygon named after the model: the SDK includes two finished models (P-47 and Ju-88) so you can look at these to see what I mean.     Here is a heads up on the SOH server, with three weeks left to meet our goal. At the time of this posting we are at 59%. Payday is approaching and we are hoping this will allow us to gather the remaining 41%. We must face facts. If we don't meet our goal please consider what SOH can do without.     Yes sorting out new computers here. Got my Win 7 x64 set up now with a ASUS 2 gig (nvivia) video card and have 16 gig DDR3+(1600) ram installed and the AMD 740 (series chipset) six core 3.5 gig cpu 2 TB in Hard drives( 2x 1TB drives)..And one USB 1TG external hard drive. Ready to get back into my missions work. Oh Yea!! Much rejoicing!!

    Yes, your machine will run this nicely. I have all of this loaded on several machines from a older E-machine, XP P-4; 3.5 Gig cpu with 2 gig DDR ram, 512meg GT 8800 video card.. To a newer ASUS Win 7, AMD 3.5 gig cpu six core, with 16 gig DDR3+ /1600 ram and a ASUS GT 620 2 Gig video card. And with what I read from your specs all of this should run very well. Go for it..

    That's a good idea Allen, I hadn't thought of that. CFS3 models can't be read by MCX so I haven't been down that route, plus the CFS3 exporter is pretty quick. However an FSX model with specular and bump textures would be best checked in FSX itself.

    Gmax doesn't do renders: it is actually 3ds Max 4.2 with the rendering, file i/o and NURBS removed. Discreet made it that way so it wouldn't destroy sales of Max but could be used with the appropriate gamepack to build game add-ons. We always check our models in FS, there's no alternative when developing with Gmax. BTW, if you're trying the P-38 tutorial in the Gmax help files, you should know the model will be backwards in FS: it's because DirectX and Gmax use different coordinate systems, one is left-handed and the other right-handed. Your model should be pointing UP in the Top view to be correct. Also, if you hit W you maximise the viewport you're working in. ;-)
